The Ottawa Senators ( IPA : [ˈɒɾəwɒː ˈsɛn.ə.tɚs] ; French Sénateurs d'Ottawa ; formerly Ottawa Silver Seven ) were a professional ice hockey team that existed from 1893 to 1934. In 1917 they were a founding member of the National Hockey League and played there as Senators until the team was relocated to St. Louis in 1934 . The 1934/35 season they played as the St. Louis Eagles before the franchise was completely dissolved.
history
Founded in Ottawa in 1893 , the Silver Seven were one of the pre-eminent teams of the sport's early years. They played in the Canadian Amateur Hockey League , Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey League , Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association , National Hockey Association, and the National Hockey League (NHL). They were founding members of the NHA and the NHL. The original name Silver Seven came from the team size required at the time. In 1927, when they last won the Stanley Cup , no other team had more titles and more Hall of Famers than the Senators.
After winning the Stanley Cup ten times by 1927, the Senators got into financial trouble. Ottawa was the smallest of the NHL cities and had problems with it like the teams in our day. The team was forced to sell its stars; For example, King Clancy in 1930 , who moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs for 35,000 CAD (inflation-adjusted approx. 360,000 EUR) and two other players . But that wasn't enough either, and in the 1932/33 season the team had to stop playing for a year.
The Senators returned the following season, but the team was too weak to build on past successes over the next two years. The once so glorious franchise moved to St. Louis to play as Eagles for another year .
It was not until the 1992/93 season that the NHL returned to Ottawa. The new team is called Ottawa Senators again and the team colors are identical (black-white-red). However, there is no other connection between the two teams.
