Patti Rothberg (born May 4, 1972 in New York City ) is an American singer-songwriter and painter .

Life

Patti Rothberg was born on May 4, 1972 in New York, the daughter of a tax attorney and a housewife. She grew up in Scarsdale , near the town where she was born. She started playing the piano at the age of three. Her instrument, however, with which she expressed her feelings, became the guitar. At 14, she joined the Rod Stewart Association in her high school. Actually, she was having an intense Siouxsie-and-the-Banshees phase at the time. She composed her own songs at the age of 15. In 1992, at 20, she went to Paris to study art. She graduated from the Parsons School of Design in New York with an "Illustration Major" degree (related to graphic design ).

She had a dorm room, no job, and was earning some money busking in the subway stations , preferably on 14th Street in Manhattan on the platform that is between the tracks on lines 1 and 9. The street worker Alicia Learned saw her sitting at Union Square Station and reciting her self-written songs. After the obligatory questions about the state of health and earnings, Gelernt made the unusual offer to the young musician to help her make demo recordings . Rothberg agreed, since she had nothing to lose. At the home studio operator Dave Greenberg, those songs were formed that a short time later convinced the Vice President of EMI to offer her a contract. It was signed in February 1995. Due to the coherent demo result, the hobby producer , who was very familiar with the artist, was also supposed to take over the professional production.

On April 2, 1996, the album Between the 1 and the 9 was released on EMI Records in the USA, and finally in Europe in September. Most of the songs were composed during her academic year in Paris from 1992 to 1993. They had been part of her diary entries. Rothberg recorded all of the guitar and bass parts and took care of the illustrations - painted cover motifs and images of every song on the album. Extensive advertising measures were effective, so that one could speak of a success. The single rotated on the music channels MTV and VH1 and reached position 71 in the US singles charts . Over 300,000 units of the album were sold in the USA and over 200,000 in Europe and Japan. Rothberg toured almost non-stop for the rest of 1996, the whole of 1997 until 1998. In the US she opened shows by Wallflowers , Chris Isaak , Midnight Oil and Garbage . In February 1997 she was touring Europe with the Black Crowes . Together with No Doubt , Jewel , Tracy Chapman , Sheryl Crow and Shawn Colvin , she sold Madison Square Garden within an hour in December 1996 under the motto "Woman Who Rule the Yule" . She has also appeared on David Letterman's Late Show , Jay Leno's The Tonight Show, and Oprah Winfrey . A cover version of Kung Fu Fighting can be heard in the movie Beverly Hills Ninja - Die Kampfwurst and her song Forgive Me was used in the movie Love and Other Adventures (The Misadventures of Margaret) .

As a result of the dissolution of the EMI branch , Rothberg lost its major label contract and thus its effectiveness in order to be able to maintain its position in the market. The second album Candelabra Cadabra was released five years after its debut in July 2001 on the independent label Cropduster, initially only as a download , only a few weeks later as a CD . Based in Bayonne , New Jersey , the label was run by a music collective that didn't want to relive their horrific experiences in the music business. For the next album, Double Standards , in May 2008, she founded her own label, Double on Tundra Records. The distribution was entrusted to Megaforce Records (MRI). In 2011 Dave Greenberg took over the producer duties for the first time. He also worked out the song structures for the album called Overnight Sensation and this time also played some instruments. The single Black Widow followed on October 4, 2013 and the album of the same name on October 31 (in between the album download). Ulterior Motives , album number 6, was released in January 2016.

style

Your musical style is mostly associated with the term " alternative ". The US industry information service Billboard spoke of alternative rock ; the German counterpart MusikWoche of Alternative Pop. Stereoplay said the style should be somewhere between alternative folk and rock . The Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger , which wrote of a “gray area between folk and American rock”, gave a similar assessment . The US Rolling Stone speaks of "folky blues , classic rock and wistful alternatives". The Internet platform Allmusic used the terms folk rock , alternative rock and blues. The musical openness of later works also led to the appreciative statement that Rothberg had enlivened her singer-songwriter existence with pop and rock.

Your texts are in places similar to those of Alanis Morissette , wrote Billboard Magazine . The text statements lay between the self-observations of a Suzanne Vega and the sweeping blows of the Yardbirds , it said in Q Magazine , and her appearance and demeanor have something of the young Patti Smith . The mojo saw parallels with Patti Smith and Joan Jett . The Rolling Stone suspected Rothenberg did the Allman Brothers and the Blake Babies absorbed. Allmusic saw the strongest influences in the Allman Brothers and Janis Joplin . In Luna Kafé Record Review of Double Standards states, "you rocking in a way as Liz Phair was a good day to own and perhaps as Tracy Bonham ."

In paintings she likes extreme contrasts, such as stars and blackness. Also the Pre-Raphaelites . She often paints pop and rock history motifs in bold colors. The picture “Janis”, for example, shows a happy smoking Janis Joplin, surrounded by dotted hearts, a waving Star Spangled banner and many stars.
