Martin first played ice hockey from 1998 to 2000 with the Elk River Elks , the high school team of Elk River High School , in the high school league system of the United States. After graduating from high school, the defense attorney won the annual Minnesota Mr. Hockey award in calendar year 2000, which honors the best high school player in the US state of Minnesota . He then spent three seasons during his college days with the University of Minnesota team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association , before the American in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft as the 62nd player in the second round of the New Jersey Devils was selected from the National Hockey League .

With his university, the left-handed shooter won the NCAA Division I championship in 2001 and 2002 and then moved to the New Jersey Devils, who immediately added him to their regular NHL squad. Martin spent the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season at the Swiss first division club Friborg-Gottéron . After his old contract in East Rutherford after the 2007/08 season had expired, the Canadians signed a three-year contract in eleven million worth of US dollars at the Devils. Due to an arm injury that he suffered in October 2009, Martin was unable to play for much of the 2009/10 season . On July 1, 2010, he signed a five-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins . This guaranteed the defender a total income of around 25 million US dollars.

This contract was not renewed after the 2014/15 season, so Martin joined the San Jose Sharks as a free agent and signed a four-year contract there. At the side of offensive defender Brent Burns , Martin initially spent two successful years with the Californians, with whom he reached the final of the Stanley Cup in the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2016 . In the 2017/18 season , which he started on the Injured Reserve List , the now 36-year-old had to give way to the younger competition in the team over and over again and also played a few games for the San Jose Barracuda in the American Hockey League . Only in the playoffs did he return to the NHL. Nevertheless, in June 2018 - shortly before the start of his fourth and last year of contract - the Sharks put him on the waiver in accordance with the regulations in order to be able to pay him the last year of his contract. The 37-year-old Martin then announced the end of his active career in November 2018.

International

With the US national team , Paul Martin took part in the U20 Junior World Championship in 2001 , the World Cup of Hockey in 2004 and the World Championships in 2005 and 2008 . He was also part of the USA team at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia . He was also nominated for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , but had to be removed from the roster a short time later due to a cross-broke.

The defender could not record a medal win at any of the tournaments. For the senior national team, he came to a total of 21 missions in which he posted nine points scorer , including one goal.
