After the bankruptcy of Peter Deilmann Reederei GmbH & Co.KG in 2009, which last generated a turnover of around 50 million euros with up to ten ocean and river cruise ships and carried around 50,000 passengers, after the re-establishment of the Reederei Peter Deilmann GmbH, the 1. January 2010 the shipping company resumed. In October 2010, the majority of the new shipping company was taken over by the German industrial holding company Aurelius AG, which, with the exception of a minority stake, sold its stake to Callista Private Equity at the beginning of 2013.

On January 20, 2015, the insolvency administrator canceled all of Germany's planned trips . The ship was sold to the USA in May 2015.

history

1972 to 2003

Peter Deilmann began operating cargo ships in 1968. It was not until four years later, in 1972, that he founded the shipping company, which became known under the Peter Deilmann brand , and worked for it until his death in November 2003.

Originally, up to ten cargo ships were on the world's oceans for the shipping company. Deilmann began entering passenger shipping with so-called butter journeys. After parting with the cargo ships and buying four passenger ships, the Nordlicht , the Nordwelle , the Nordbrise and the Nordschau , the company set up a ferry service from Neustadt to Bornholm , which was served by the Nordlicht . The Nordwelle and the Nordschau also ran day trips from Neustadt in Holstein and carried more than 250,000 passengers annually in the 1970s.

The first cruises were undertaken in the early years of the shipping company with the north breeze from Neustadt. At that time, destinations such as the GDR , Poland and Greenland were on the ship's course.

In 1979 Deilmann expanded its activities in the passenger shipping industry and ordered the construction of the first own cruise ship , the Berlin , at HDW in Kiel in order. In the same year Deilmann bought the Regina Maris , a cruise ship for 276 passengers and offered worldwide cruises with it. The ship was then registered in Singapore .

The Berlin
Sail plan of Lili Marleen

After the completion of the Berlin in 1980, Deilmann offered luxury cruises under the motto “German cruise tradition”, which is still a registered trademark and motto of the shipping company. The concept worked and Deilmann's ships drove with good utilization.

In 1983 the company sold the Regina Maris again, and the shipping company's first river cruise ship, the Danube Princess , was bought to offer river cruises on the Danube from and to Passau.

In 1986 the Berlin was extended by 20 meters and the passenger capacity increased to 420 passengers. In the same year the ship became the filming location for the popular ZDF television series “ Das Traumschiff ”.

In 1991, the Princess von Preussen was stationed on the Elbe as the shipping company's second river cruise ship , where she undertook numerous cruises up to 2002. Due to the success, the shipping company decided in 1992 to build the sister ship Princesse de Provence to offer cruises on the Rhone and Saône rivers . In 1993 the offer was expanded with the Dresden on the Elbe and the Mozart on the Danube. In the same year, the Princess of Prussia also changed her sailing area to the Rhine .

With the construction of the tall ship Lili Marleen in 1994, Deilmann broke new ground for his company. On the worldwide cruises, the sailing experience in a casual atmosphere without evening wear and without a rigid route should be the focus for the 50 passengers.

With the opening of its own sales office in the USA, the shipping company conquered new markets in 1995. In 1996 the company River and Ocean Cruises Ltd. was taken over. from England to sell the trips in Great Britain. Since then, all of the company's brochures and catalogs have also been published in English. In addition, the shipping company commissioned the construction of another ocean-going ship. On December 6, 1996, start of combustion at HDW in Kiel for Germany, the former president of Kiel on 4 May 1998 Richard von Weizsäcker was baptized, and shortly thereafter took their first world tour.

The Katharina von Bora

In 1997 the Deilmann shipping company was one of the market leaders with more than 30,000 cruise passengers annually. They wanted to expand this position with the purchase of the Königstein , which was used on the rivers Elbe , Oder , Havel and Moldau from spring 1998 after extensive renovations .

In 1999, the Berlin was replaced by the Deutschland as a television spaceship, making it the most famous German cruise ship. With the purchase of the ships Katharina von Bora and Cézanne , the shipping company expanded its fleet.

The company suffered a severe blow on July 25, 2000 when the Concorde flight AF4590 crashed on the way to New York shortly after take-off in Paris. This flight was a charter flight of the Peter Deilmann shipping company; most of the 110 fatalities were on the way to a Caribbean cruise of Germany . In 2000, Germany was on the road as the German ambassador for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and was in port as the “German ship” during the games in September. In addition to a few passengers remaining on board, the Deutschland acted as a floating hotel, especially for athletes and coaches of the German team.

In 2001 the company bought the Casanova , another river cruise ship, in order to offer cruises to the Venetian lagoon. This meant that Deilmann had a large part of the western European rivers in its timetable. Further newbuildings on the European rivers were the Frédéric Chopin in 2002 and the Heidelberg in 2004.

After the death of the founder Peter Deilmann in November 2003, his two daughters Gisa and Hedda Deilmann jointly took over the management of the shipping company.

2003 to mid-2009

In 2004 the company sold the tall ship Lili Marleen, as Peter Deilmann had planned. The Berlin , the second ocean-going ship, made a farewell round in the same year after 25 years at sea and was to be replaced by a new building in 2005. The new sister ship of Germany was also to be built in the style of the 1920s and used for 700 passengers on the English and American markets. This never happened, the plans have been in the drawer ever since and have been postponed again and again.

In 2006, Germany was appointed global ambassador for the soccer World Cup that was held in June . On this occasion, a Blue Goal light installation was installed on deck 10. The anniversary year of Germany was celebrated in 2008 with the ship's gala trips.

In October 2008 44 water skiers from the "First German Waterski Show Team" set a world record behind the MS Heidelberg with a distance of 3.9 km up the Moselle.

At the beginning of March 2009 the shipping company put two of its river cruise ships, the Dresden and the Königstein , out of service for the 2009 season due to a poor order situation after the number of passengers in the river cruise division had fallen by 45 percent within a year. According to the shipping company, the cause was the absence of British and US travelers due to the deterioration in the exchange rate of the pound and dollar against the euro. Previously, in 2008, the shipping company had already sold and chartered the Princesse de Provence and Königstein river cruise ships .

Shortly before filing for insolvency, Peter Deilmann Reederei GmbH & Co. KG relocated to Cuxhaven in June 2009.

Bankruptcy and renaming (2009)

In June 2009, in addition to the shipping company, various companies in the river cruises division filed for insolvency with the Cuxhaven bankruptcy court. The season should be served until the end. Deilmann employed 250 people in this division. The company justified the application for insolvency by stating that loans were due at short notice and that applications "for liquidity assistance from the banks and politicians were negative". The provisional administration of the assets of Peter Deilmann Reederei GmbH & Co KG was ordered by ruling of June 25, 2009 by the Cuxhaven insolvency court (Az .: 12 IN 123/09) . Lawyer Edgar Grönda from Bremen was appointed as the preliminary insolvency administrator. With a further resolution on September 1, 2009 under the same legal act, the Cuxhaven insolvency court opened insolvency proceedings over the assets of Peter Deilmann Reederei GmbH & CO. KG and the Deilmann river shipping companies. The previously provisionally appointed lawyer Edgar Gronda was confirmed as insolvency administrator. In the summer of 2009, the company announced that 75 employees in Neustadt were dismissed; 45 could stay with the company.

At the beginning of October 2009, the Lübeck public prosecutor had the Deilmann business premises in Neustadt and several river cruise ships searched and documents secured. She justified this with suspicion of tax evasion and the withholding of wages. According to the public prosecutor's office, employees of a Czech temporary employment agency were deployed on river cruise ships that had no corresponding permission from the Federal Employment Agency .

In November 2009, the sale of seven of the nine river cruise ships to a Swiss group of companies became known, the purchase price was not known. In the 2009 financial year, sales of 50 million euros were achieved.

The Peter Deilmann Reederei GmbH & Co. KG was continued by the insolvency administrator.

On January 1, 2010, the shipping company Peter Deilmann GmbH started its activity, which was founded as an asset management company and had its headquarters in Ganderkesee at the founding company Copia Vermögensverwaltung GmbH . Later the place of business was moved to Neustadt. The managing partners are Gisa and Hedda Deilmann. The company employs 45 people at its headquarters in Neustadt in Holstein.

The fire on the Deutschland on May 23, 2010 brought the shipping company into trouble again. In addition to the repair costs of an estimated two million euros, several million euros are also due to canceled cruises. After the fire, the Germany lost its status as a “five-star superior” ship, a classification of the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA) following a court order . According to a press release by the shipping company, it was a lawsuit by competitor Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten with the equally well-known Europa , although the lawsuit would have been dismissed by the Berlin Regional Court (→ section “ From September 2010 ”).

Also in 2010 the new build of a sister ship of Germany was canceled. After the takeover by Aurelius AG (see below), however, the new building was considered again.

Majority takeover by Aurelius

On August 30, 2010, it was announced that the listed investment company Aurelius AG had taken over a majority stake in the shipping company . The Munich-based industrial holding took over the majority in Deilmann with a double-digit million amount and is therefore the majority owner of the “ZDF dream ship 'MS Deutschland'” through the subsidiary Schiffahrtsgesellschaft MS “Deutschland” GmbH & Co. KG . The transfer of the company was justified by the difficult overall economic situation of the shipping company and the fire damage on the Germany . The takeover had to be approved by the cartel authorities and the banks. The 95% share takeover was confirmed in September 2010, and the twin sisters Gisa and Hedda Deilmann still held five percent of the former family company. Andreas Demel was appointed as interim managing director. Gisa and Hedda Deilmann took on tasks in public relations and acted as their "ambassadors" for Germany . At the same time a modernization of Germany was announced. The two Deilmanns justified their entrepreneurial decision by stating that no family today “has the financial means to survive the times of international mergers”.

At the beginning of January 2014, Aurelius AG sold its stake to Callista Private Equity, also based in Munich. However, she retained a minority share in the shipping company.

From September 2010

At the beginning of September 2010, the shipping company announced in a press release that the highest classification “5 star superior” awarded by the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA) to Germany as the only ship could continue to be used. The complaint brought against DEHOGA by the competitor Hapag Lloyd with its Europe to withdraw the classification of Germany was rejected by the Berlin Regional Court. It is not clear from the Deilmann broadcast whether Hapag Lloyd has accepted the rejection or will appeal. However, the judges of the regional court ruled against DEHOGA on another point : In their opinion, the criteria for assessing country hotels should not be transferred 1: 1 to ships in the future. This is misleading as some criteria do not fit, such as B. the criterion parking spaces. DEHOGA had announced that it would appeal against this.

Unlike other renounced the shipping company since founding it, under "flags of convenience" (their ships flying flags to let go), about the flag of Panama, Liberia, Honduras' or the Bahamas. The Deutschland was the last ocean cruise ship that sailed under the German flag . a. German law, which is stricter than flags of convenience, was also applied to staff. Both this and the high standard of service consequently entailed higher personnel costs. In June 2012, however, it became known that the Germany would in future fly under the flag of Malta . After the topic was publicly debated for days, the company announced that it would not flag the ship out. The company is taking into account the “emotional mood” and has decided “in view of the great interest” to continue to sail the ship under the German flag. In March 2015, Germany was sold to a US company as part of insolvency proceedings, handed over on May 19, 2015 and flagged out on the flag of convenience of the Bahamas .
