Peter Voss, der Millionendieb is a German film by Wolfgang Becker from 1958 with OW Fischer in the title role. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Ewald Gerhard Seeliger . In 1959 followed, also with Fischer in the leading role, the sequel Peter Voss - the hero of the day .

Peter Voss, a travel writer and globetrotter, is making headlines once again: "Peter Voss saves princess", "Peter Voss injured in a car race", "Peter Voss elected chief", "Peter Voss lost in the ocean" etc. The young Barbara Rottmann hears on the radio that Peter Voss has been tracked down and is already back in Cuxhaven and reacts excitedly. Shortly afterwards he embraces her. Her father Hans Rottmann, a banker, is also happy to see her friend again. He tells Voss that he ruined a Hong Kong jewelery business and is now in financial trouble. Voss makes the suggestion to stage a bank robbery in order to collect the money that the insurance company has to pay, which Rottmann would then use to rehabilitate. Although there is nothing to steal in the safe, the all- rounder Peter Voss pulls off the plan. The insurance company hired detective Bobby Dodd to investigate the case and determine if a payment needs to be made.

When Barbara Rottmann, irritated by the detective's investigations, asks her father whether Voss actually committed the bank robbery, he replies with a smile that she must ask him that herself. Barbara then books a trip on the ship on which Voss hired as a steward. Bobby Dodd went on board too. A gang, whose boss calls himself “the Baron”, and which was actually aiming for Rottmann's bank vault, comes on board to steal the alleged prey from Voss. In addition to Willy and Otto, the young, attractive Marion also belongs to this gang. When the ship docks in Rio de Janeiro , Dodd does not want to let Voss off board. He throws a tied package from the ship and Dodd falls for the trick; he should believe that the prey is in it. When he opens the package, he finds a voucher for three million. Voss has since left the ship, but Dodd can follow him in a taxi with Barbara. In a collision with another car, both are kidnapped by the gang because they are believed to be accomplices of Peter Voss. Meanwhile, Marion, the female member of the clique, has located Voss and informs him that her partners are demanding three million ransom. However, you can imagine doing business with him yourself and sharing the booty with him.

Disguised as a local, Voss appears in Barbara and Dodd's hiding place and manages to free them single-handedly. However, when shots are fired (fortunately Bobby Dodd had replaced live ammunition with blank cartridges ), police officers become aware that Barbara and Voss can convince them that Bobby Dodd is the Peter Voss they are looking for. He is then taken away.

Voss wants to continue to Hong Kong via Mexico . Dodd has now been able to prove his identity and is now at large. Barbara manages to persuade the detective to take her to Hong Kong. On the plane, Voss sits next to Ramon Cadalso, a famous bullfighter who suffers from a fear of flying. Since Voss suspects that they are already looking for him, he uses a ruse to impersonate Cadalso during a stopover. The police who have arrived are being led by the nose once again. Voss comes back on board in a different disguise before the plane flies on to Tokyo. Dodd and Barbara are already waiting there. With a feint, Dodd manages to get Voss to get off the plane. To his displeasure, however, he cannot elicit Voss here either, where the three million are.

When he arrived in Hong Kong, Voss went to the jeweler Van Zanten, Barbara Rottmann's godfather, and met his daughter Monique there. Van Zanten assures him that he is about to liquidate his property and that his "old friend" Rottmann will of course get his money. There was a car accident in which Van Zanten was seriously injured and his chauffeur was killed, and millions of diamonds were also lost. To Voss' astonishment, however, the theft was not reported.

When Barbara Rottmann wants to visit Van Zanten, it turns out that the former secretary of her godfather is playing his role. When Barbara is anxious to leave the property, her way is blocked. Meanwhile, Voss is on the road with Monique. He noticed that Monique had put something in his milk and emptied the glass unnoticed, but pretended that the remedy started to work. Monique takes him to a drug clinic on false claims. However, Voss can escape again. In the meantime Dodd has gone to the address that Barbara left at the hotel. When he asked about her, the alleged Van Zanten told him that Barbara had only been there for a short time and that he did not know where she was now.

When Voss arrives at the villa, he is able to stop Van Zanten and Monique, who are just about to run away, and secure the suitcases with the loot. Then, however, Dodd shows up with two policemen, does not believe Voss' imploring words and then gives the suitcase with the loot back to the fake Van Zanten. The gang of bank robbers also watched the event. Willy pretends to be the taxi driver ordered, so that the gang Claasen, who pretends to be Van Zanten, and Monique get into their power. Voss, whose story the police want to check, escapes again in an unsupervised moment. Meanwhile Dodd has been able to free Barbara. In fact, “the baron” and his gang were able to appropriate the coveted suitcases. A mass brawl breaks out in the bar where Voss tracks them down, in the course of which Voss is able to retrieve the two suitcases. On his breakneck drive through Hong Kong, Voss is followed by gang members and the police. He drives straight to the police station, where the gang is arrested. Peter Voss has fulfilled his mission: suitcase with diamonds back, suitcase with money too. Peter Voss and Bobby Dodd say goodbye as friends.

The film was shot with great effort at original locations in Lisbon , Rio de Janeiro , Mexico City , Tokyo , Hong Kong , Barcelona , Berlin , Genoa , Hamburg and Marseille . Further recordings were made in the Bavaria Film studios in Munich - Geiselgasteig .

It is a film production by Kurt Ulrich for UFA . Ulrich had originally counted on Eddie Constantine for the role of Peter Voss . When this canceled at short notice, OW Fischer stepped in.

The film ran in the Federal Republic of Germany on October 16, 1958 in the Lichtburg in Essen .

DVD

The film was released on July 6, 2007 by Kinowelt / Studiocanal on DVD, playing time 106 minutes. On November 7th, 2008 Kinowelt Home Entertainment released the DVD “A reunion with OW Fischer” with the films Peter Voss, the millionaire and Peter Voss - the hero of the day . A 28-page booklet with star information is included as an extra.

Cinema was of the opinion "that this purring version was a hit in 1958" [...] and summarized "Cheaters of yesterday: colorful cinema nostalgia." The lexicon of international films said that the film was “nicely illustrated with colorful pictures”, “but only contained a few really successful scenes”.
