Peter Johann Brandl (born October 24, 1668 in Prague , † September 24, 1735 in Kuttenberg ; also Brandel or Prantl , in Czech Jan Petr Brandl ) was a Bohemian Baroque painter .

Education and Success

Brandl was a student of the Prague court painter Christian Schröder from 1685 to 1691 . Here he got to know the works of Dutch and Italian masters. However, his model was the painter Karl Skreta ( Karel Škréta ). The first portraits, with which he soon became known, he made at the age of 19. Commissions from church institutions for religious works followed, with which he gained a great reputation. Since 1694 he was master of the old town painter mine . His works include portraits , genre pictures , religious representations and images from mythology . Alongside Wenzel Lorenz Reiner , he is described as the most important painter of the heyday of the Bohemian Baroque. One of his students was Christian Philipp Bentum .

In his pictures he chose dramatic productions that he combined with light sources and shades. The vivid characteristics of his personalities allowed him to paint accurate portraits. JQ Jahn wrote about him: "He modeled whole figures and groups of figures in the mud so that he could read the refraction of light and the shadow play."

Origin and family

Johann Peter Brandl was the son of wealthy parents. His father was a tailor and innkeeper, probably of German origin, his mother Alžběta Hrbková came from a farming family from Přestanice . He first attended the Jesuit high school . At the age of 33 he married the daughter of a painter, with whom he had three children, whom he later left. His son Anton was an engraver. Although he was well paid for his work, he lived in disorderly financial circumstances and led an unsteady life. So he had to z. B. for the execution of the order of the Grüssau main altarpiece can only be ransomed by the abbot from the Königgrätzer guilty prison.

Towards the end of his life, Brandl settled in Kuttenberg, where - despite his great artistic success - he is said to have died impoverished. His grave is in the local Marienkirche.

The artist is a distant ancestor of contemporary Austrian painter Herbert Brandl and contemporary American and Swiss painter Mark Staff Brandl .
