history

Tower floor with Romanesque sound windows and baroque tower, view from the east

According to excavations, there was already a church in Mosnang around the time the village was first mentioned in 854. In the High Middle Ages a church was built, of which the tower with the Romanesque windows has been preserved. From 1528 to 1531 Mosnang was reformed . After the church was enlarged, the high altar was rededicated in 1589 . In 1697 the patronage came to the Fischingen monastery through the purchase of the Tannegg estate from the Konstanz cathedral monastery .

In 1731 the Romanesque church, with the exception of the tower and the surrounding walls of the choir, was replaced by a baroque building in just eight months . In 1748, Mosnang, like all other parishes in the Prince Abbey of St. Gallen, was placed under the spiritual jurisdiction of the Abbey of St. Gallen; the collature and the lower jurisdiction , however, remained with Fischingen monastery. In 1761, the Holy Blood Chapel was built in place of an ossuary . In 1750 and 1764, respectively, the newly founded parishes of Libingen and Mühlrüti were separated from the mother church in Mosnang.

From 1796 to 1799 the church was extended and redesigned. Instead of the wooden ceiling, a shallow gypsum barrel was pulled in and new altars were built. Between 1890 and 1892 August Hardegger planned a restoration in line with historicism . The parish church received u. a. a dark exterior plaster with light pilaster strips and colored church windows. In 1912/1913 a two-story sacristy was built on the south side of the choir .

In 1958/1959 a total restoration took place in which the historicizing interventions were reversed. The sacristy, built in 1912, was replaced by an underground choir sacristy and the colored church windows gave way to honeycomb windows. The church received a new organ and a new vestibule with side gallery stairs. During the total restoration carried out in 1993/1994, the roof structure had to be reinforced and the plaster ceiling partially renewed.

Structural appearance

Late baroque parish church of St. Georg and Theodul - interior

The baroque building ends in a largely Gothic choir, on the north side of which stands the church tower with exposed tuff . On the massive tower shaft there is a baroque tower top with oculi , clock panels , arched sound windows and a lightly laced onion hood . The pilaster-framed main portal with a sandstone arch shows the year 1797 and a Christ monogram. A former choir arch crucifix from around 1600 has been attached to the right of the portal since 1959 .

The interior has an unusual color scheme: the space envelope is colored pale red and the architectural elements are tinted gray. Bright green and light yellow partly Louis XVI - stucco tie a painted ceilings, which put together with the equipment, the optical accents.

Furnishing

The ceiling paintings are the work of the Württemberg painter Josef Anton Mesmer . The resurrection of Christ is represented in the choir . The picture in the first yoke shows the Adoration of the Shepherds . The large picture in the middle shows the Last Supper in a pillared hall. In the last picture the adoration of the kings is shown. The eight medallions on the side of the nave show scenes from the Old Testament.

In the upper picture of the altar , God the Father, who is surrounded by angels, is shown. The picture is from Josef Anton Mesmer. In the arched entablature is a double shield with the two bishops Joseph Hasler and Joseph Meile from Mosnang . It is reminiscent of the church renovation in the 1950s. The main picture with the Virgin Mary adoring the baby Jesus comes from a school in Northern Italy and was bought in 1959. The two statues to the left and right of the high altar are the two church patrons Georg and Theodul . On the altar table is a tabernacle from 1959, on the door of which Jesus and the disciples in Emmaus are depicted.

The two side altars are dedicated to the Mother of God and St. Joseph . The two pictures above are by Josef Anton Mesmer. On the left one sees the offering in the temple , on the right the ascension of Christ . The two altarpieces were bought in 1959. The left altarpiece shows Sebastian and Rochus , who are reminiscent of the Black Death , which also raged terribly in Mosnang; In 1565 only 93 inhabitants survived the plague epidemic. The death of St. Joseph is shown on the altarpiece on the right.

In the niches to the left of the choir stand two figures of prince apostles from the early 19th century. A late Gothic crucifix from around 1530 to 1550 hangs on the right side wall of the choir. When the interior of the choir was renovated in 1945 and 1946, medieval wall paintings were discovered. The pictures to the left and right of the high altar have been exposed as far as possible.

The pulpit , like the altars, is made of stucco marble . In a former confessional niche under the pulpit there is a baroque statue of Our Lady. The stations of the cross on the left and right side walls are by Josef Anton Mesmer. In a niche in the right side wall are figures of St. Francis , St. Wendelin and Niklaus von Flüe .
