Philetus Swift

Philetus Swift (born June 26, 1763 in Kent , Litchfield County , Colony of Connecticut , † July 24, 1828 in Phelps , Ontario County , New York ) was an American politician.

Career

Swift decided to pursue a political career. He was a member of the New York State Assembly , where he represented Genesee , Ontario, and Allegany Counties between 1807 and 1808, and Ontario Counties in 1823.

He also fought in the British-American War , where he last held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel .

Swift was a member of the New York Senate from 1810 to 1815, and then again from 1816 to 1818 , representing the Western District. When John Tayler became acting governor of New York after the resignation of Daniel D. Tompkins in February 1817 , Swift was elected President pro Tempore in the Senate. He was until July 1, 1817 Acting Deputy Governor ( Engl. Lieutenant Governor ).

When Swift died in 1828, he was buried in Pioneer Cemetery with Phelps. However, in the early 1900s, his granddaughter and remains were reburied in the Webster Rural Cemetery in Webster, New York.

Philetus Swift was the son of Elisha Swift (* 1731) and Mary Ransom (* 1738). On April 4, 1786, he married his first wife, Electra Goodrich, in Sharon , Connecticut. Then on May 22, 1793 he married his second wife, Sally Deane (1774-1820?), In Phelps (New York). The couple had a son, Deane Swift (1794-1818). On November 26, 1823 he married his third wife, Fanny (or Fauna, Fawnia, Faunia) Cole (approx. 1792-1880). The couple had a daughter, Electra Jane Swift (1825-1904).
