Philipp August Wilhelm von Werther (born May 19, 1729 in Gersdorf ; † July 1, 1802 in Königsberg ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and chief of the 6th Dragoon Regiment .

Life

He was the son of Hans Heinrich von Werther († 1754) and his wife Elisabeth Dionysia Philippine, born von Borcke (1702–1762). His father was a Prussian captain a. D. , last in the infantry regiment "von Borcke" , and hereditary lord of Alt-Strudnitz and Kallies . His mother was a daughter of the Chancellor of the Neumark Georg Matthias von Borcke (1671-1740) and sister of the Minister Kaspar Wilhelm von Borcke . Major General Georg Ehrenreich von Werther (1742–1816) was his brother.

Military career

Werther came on November 5, 1732 to the high school in Stargard in Pomerania . He then went into Prussian service and joined the "von Möllendorff" dragoon regiment as a flag junior . There he became ensign on March 8, 1747 and second lieutenant on June 9, 1752 . On November 13, 1754, Werther received three months' leave to visit his mother in Falkenberg in the Neumark. During the Seven Years' War he fought in the battles of Kunersdorf , Groß-Jägersdorf , Kay and Zorndorf . At that time he was on September 14, 1759 Prime Lieutenant and on November 19, 1760 staff captain .

After the war he became captain and squadron chief on September 17, 1766 and major on December 8, 1770 . As such, he also took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession . On May 25, 1782 he rose to lieutenant colonel and on September 24, 1782 to colonel. On July 31, 1787 he was appointed commander of the "Count von Posadowsky" dragoon regiment. On June 8, 1789, the king awarded him the order Pour le Mérite at the review at Heiligenbeil, and on April 9, 1790, Werther became chief of the "von Rohr" dragoon regiment. Shortly afterwards, on August 13, 1790, he was appointed major general. During the First Coalition War , Werther was appointed inspector general of the East Prussian cavalry regiments on behalf of General Kalckreuth, for which he received an allowance of 500 thalers. On January 1, 1796, he became lieutenant general. On May 29, 1796 he celebrated his 50th anniversary in service. On this occasion he received a valuable medal from the officers of the regiment. On June 5, 1798, he received the Red Eagle Order at the Revue . He died on July 1, 1802 in Königsberg in Prussia.

The sculptor Karl Wichmann created a bust of the general in 1835.

Werther married Wilhelmine Katharine von Hirsch (* 1741; † March 28, 1765) from the Regitten family in the castle church in Königsberg on January 20, 1764 . From this marriage comes:
