In the survey “Made in Germany - The Most Influential German Musicians”, Phillip Boa was listed in the top 20 ( laut.de ). The band leader is said to be “one of the keenest observers of our society” and “Germany's most prominent songwriter”, with “a cynical-poetic look, full of enigmatic metaphors and sharp wisdom” (New Musical Express) as well as “magical prose / poetry in texts and figures, at the same time tender and brute chorale, romantic where it fits ”. "His ideology is the refusal to curry favor with the media and show business." ( Rolling Stone )

history

Phillip Boa and the Voodooclub was founded in 1985 by Phillip Boa. Other band members from the very beginning were Pia Lund , Voodoo and Der Rabe. In the same year the band released their first album, Philistines . Philistines appeared on the label JA! Music and made it into the German indie charts. From 1986 Philistines were sold across Europe under the Red Flame label . The second album, Aristocracie , was released by Phillip Boa and the Voodooclub on the Constrictor label, Phillip Boa's own label. It was produced by Eroc , a student of producer Conny Plank . This album enjoyed increasing popularity, so it is at number 10 on the best list of the independent music magazine Spex in 1986 again. It was particularly successful in Great Britain . The band toured Europe since 1987. Phillip Boa and the Voodooclub then signed a contract with the Polydor label , on which the next albums Copperfield and Hair appeared. In 1989, the single Container Love achieved commercial success and international recognition. In 1991 the album Helios (or as a rare double album) was released on Polydor.

After the band's most successful album to date, Boaphenia (released in 1993 on the Polydor label ), Phillip Boa devoted himself to his metal project Voodoocult . Other albums ( God , 1994, She , 1996, Lord Garbage , 1998) were released on Motor Music in the following years. After Pia Lund left between 1997 and 2003, Alison Galea of the Maltese band Beangrowers took her place and took over the high vocal parts. The Beangrowers were sponsored by Phillip Boa and appeared around 2000 as the opening act on the tours of Phillip Boa and the Voodooclub. Since 2001, every year at Christmas time, “cult concerts” have been held in the Moritzbastei in Leipzig on three consecutive evenings (“The legendary Christmas concerts”).

Between 2000 and 2003 Phillip Boa and the Voodooclub released a total of three albums on the Sony / BMG-RCA label ( My Private War , 2000, The Red , 2001, C 90 , 2003). In 2005, the album Decadence & Isolation was released on the Motor Music label , which builds on the sound of the 1980s from bands such as The Cure and Joy Division . In autumn 2006 Boa went on a remastered tour with his voodoo club . Only pieces from the three re-released albums Copperfield , Hair and Hispanola were consistently played there. In 2007 the album Faking to Blend In was released on Motor Music. In February 2009 the album Diamonds Fall was released by Rough Trade . For this, the Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit was hired as a member of the voodoo club for all of the drums and percussion. In the summer of 2010, the live album Exile on Strait Street was released on their own label Constrictor. The albums Helios and Boaphenia were re-mastered on Vertigo / Universal in spring 2011 .

In August 2012, Loyalty, a new studio album, was released on Cargo Records . The album was recorded in Malta and London and produced by David Vella, Boa and Brian Viglione , mixed by Ian Grimble in London and mastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios . In the same year John Robb, a renowned English music critic, wrote in Louder Than War Magazine : “Boa is one of the most important German artists of the last 30 years.” In July 2013, the fan album Reduced! , which was recorded in the Moritzbastei in winter 2012. It should radiate “the dirt and intensity of intimate club concerts”. Only the instrumentation was worked out in the studio, errors remained uncorrected. At the same time, it should set a “monument” to Pia Lund , who left the band at the end of 2013 at her own request. The voodoo club has been working with various guest singers since 2014. On August 22, 2014, the studio album Bleach House was released on Cargo Records, and reached number 7 in the album charts. The album was produced by David Vella in Malta and London, mixed at Konk Studios London by Dougal Lott and mastered by Fred Kevorkian at Avatar Studios in New York.

After many intensive years and more than 2.5 million records sold, the Blank Expression - A History Of Singles 1986-2016 show was published on September 16, 2016 on Capitol Records / Universal Music and reached number 8 in the album charts. In addition to the most important singles, the retrospective includes a. also 12 new songs under the album title "Fresco - A Collection Of 12 New Songs". The “Blank Expression” tour 2016/2017 was another milestone for the band towards old greatness. The current visitor numbers reach the level of the most successful year so far (1993), u. a. the voodoo club played sold out shows in Hamburg, Cologne, Dresden and Munich as well as on two evenings in a row in the sold out Berlin “Huxleys Neue Welt”.

On August 10, 2018, the new studio album Earthly Powers was released via Cargo Records and reached (despite a refusal to stream music ) with number 3 in the German album charts, the highest chart position in the band's history. Most of the album was created and recorded in London, produced by David Vella and Boa. The album was mixed by Ian Grimble in Church Studios, London, known for his work for Manic Street Preachers , Mumford & Sons , Daughter and Temples . Mastering took place in Power Station Studios, New York, by Fred Kevorkian ( The National , Sonic Youth , White Stripes ). "Earthly Powers sounds fantastic, offers great songwriting. A diverse album full of little stories, all of which have been packed into strong songs and lead to a new artistic peak."

On the stage the Voodoo Club played a. a. with other bands and artists such as David Bowie , Bob Dylan , John Lydon's Public Image Ltd. , Nick Cave , Sonic Youth , Björk , The Fall , Residents , Gun Club , Iggy Pop and Manic Street Preachers . The Voodooclub u. a. by Tony Visconti (David Bowie), John Leckie (Morrissey, New Order), Gareth Jones (Interpol, Depeche Mode), Gordon Raphael (Strokes), Ian Grimble (Manic Street Preachers, Bauhaus, Mumford and Sons) and worked with Aphex Twin , LFO , Schneider TM , The Notwist , Jaki Liebezeit (CAN) and Brian Viglione ( Dresden Dolls , Nine Inch Nails ) together.

style

Boas' music is influenced by British post-punk , indie / alternative rock and avant-garde . Boa's compositions and cinematic song titles are often used throughout Europe as background music or soundtracks for reports, documentaries and films. a. He contributed several songs to the award-winning BBC drama "Redemption" (with Oscar nominated actors Sir Tom Courtenay and Miranda Richardson ).

As a German composer and songwriter, Boa sets himself apart from classical songwriting through his approach to composing. He starts with a storyboard, as if he were making a short film, like a cartoon, with rough scribbles, drawings and complete texts. Only when he has finished this storyboard does he go into the studio and shoot this film with his musicians as a “director without pictures”. What the musicians then get from him as a specification is the key, the precise speed and an exact description of the “film scenes”.
