geography

Polenz aerial view

Polenz is located in the immediate vicinity of Meißen and, due to its exposed location, is a popular excursion destination with a view of the Triebischtal and Meißen.

history

In a document issued by Bishop Martin von Meißen on May 24, 1180 in Meißen , Christianus von Polenzke is named as the penultimate witness. In 1198 it is mentioned that a Gottschalk von Polenz appears as a witness on the Landding in Colmnitz. Both belong to the ancestors of the Polentz family, who came from the town . The Polenz Chapel was first mentioned in a document in 1402. Heinrich von Karras owns Polenz in 1405. In the middle of the 16th century, the Bärensteiner bought the place. In 1588 the village was divided up by Magnus von Bärenstein between his sons Thomas and Albrecht. The manors of Upper and Lower Poland have existed since then.

From 1909 to 1966, Polenz had a stop on the narrow-gauge railway Wilsdruff-Gärtitz .

The Bockwen-Polenz community was founded on January 1, 1973 and merged with the Scharfenberg community on April 1, 1993 . On January 1, 1999, the large community of Klipphausen was formed, to which Polenz belongs.

Attractions

Several buildings in the village are protected as cultural monuments (see list of cultural monuments in Polenz ). The Polenz Tower can be seen from afar and is used by Deutsche Telekom AG. In the valley of the Kleine Triebisch there is a cycling and hiking path on the route of the narrow-gauge railway Wilsdruff – Gärtitz . This connects Semmelsberg with Taubenheim and leads past four former mills, including the Preisker mill and the Helmmühle.
