Police puppet stages or traffic puppet stages are puppet theaters that have been run by police institutions in Germany since the 1950s . They are often affiliated with police prevention departments.

History, intention and dissemination

The first German police puppet stage was created in Hamburg under the direction of Heinz Krause . Another pioneer of this special form of puppet theater was the founder and long-time director of the Bonn police puppet theater Theo Flohr.

Police officers - usually in uniform - act as puppeteers at the police puppet stages and perform plays on topics of traffic education and crime prevention for children in kindergarten and primary school . In a playful way, they try to make the children aware of the dangers in traffic and when dealing with unknown people. As a rule, they use the puppet leadership technique of the hand puppet .

In Germany today there is a dense network of police puppet stages. You can find them at the police station in

As part of budget savings, individual state governments considered abolishing their police puppet stages. For educators and in the ranks of artistic puppetry such plans met with fierce criticism. In Schleswig-Holstein , privatization intentions have been rejected. In Rhineland-Palatinate , police dolls' stages are still being built against the national trend.

In Stuttgart , traffic puppet shows are not performed by the police, but by employees of the traffic watch. Also independently of the police, Jo Micovich from Wuppertal performed pedagogical puppet shows with her Vagantenbühne . With the Karlsruher Verkehrskasper by Siegbert A. Warwitz , a didactic renewal of the educational theater took place in the 1970s, which put the child as actor in the center: the children are allowed to represent their own traffic experiences, their fears and wishes as puppet guides on the stage and discuss with their audience. You cooperate with young people who act as players in an advisory capacity. In this way, even the older cohorts are reached in terms of traffic education until they graduate from school and are made responsible. The traffic problems are not only dealt with in a receptive manner, but above all actively.

Police puppet shows as radio plays

Many of today's
Verkehrskasper resemble this Hohnsteiner Kasper ; but also newer forms of representation are used on the police puppet stages

The growing success of the first police puppet stages in the 1960s and 1970s made it possible to bring out individual pieces as radio plays . The most important of these long-playing records were made with the help of the Hamburg police playgroups:

  • The police officer and his friends trip the traffic devil (E287)
  • The police rascal chases a dangerous man (E2011)

Both radio plays are played and spoken by the performers Helmuth Arndt, Wolfgang Preuss and Horst Persch. They have been published by the radio play label EUROPA . There are also the radio plays:

  • Kasper stops the road shock
  • Kasper chases the traffic light offenders
  • Kasper protects the zebra crossing
  • Kasper stops the street balls
  • Kasper catches the bicycle thieves

Except for road fright and bicycle thieves , they are all played and spoken by the performers Heinz Krause, Herbert Behnke and Hans-Werner Sperling. They were produced by Peter Folken and Konrad Halver . They were published by the record label of BASF . In road shock and Bicycle Thief 's team Helmuth Arndt (as in the aforementioned radio plays EUROPE) played.

There was also a large number of traffic-pedagogical Kasper radio plays that were created without the involvement of the actual police puppet stages. The artistically and pedagogically more valuable among them are those of Gerd von Haßler .

Imitators of the idea: the so-called purpose game

In the course of the decades numerous other interest and professional groups have also used the medium of the puppet show based on the model of the police puppet theater, from which the puppetry genre of the purpose game has grown. Performances of this kind associated with one or more specific learning objectives can be found, for example, in the working environment of fire brigades , health insurance companies and health authorities with topics such as healthy nutrition or dental health, or environmental and nature conservation organizations with topics such as waste disposal and behavior in the forest .

Awards
