occupation

Death makes angels out of us all is a TV film from the crime series Polizeiruf 110 . The film, produced on behalf of Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) and directed by Jan Bonny , premiered on July 4, 2013 at the Munich Film Festival and was broadcast for the first time on ARD on July 14, 2013 . It is the 336th Police Call 110 episode and the fifth case for Chief Inspector Hanns von Meuffels .

action

Chief Inspector Hanns von Meuffels determined this time in internal circles. He is investigating the city police station 25, where a young transgender person inexplicably died in the sobering cell. Her partner has filed a complaint against the district. Von Meuffels, together with his assistant Burnhauser, tries to find out whether the five police officers on duty really acted according to the rules that night or whether more happened in the cell than was stated in the police report for the first investigation. Surveillance recordings from the night of death are unfortunately not available because two cameras had allegedly failed for a long time. Inquiries in forensic medicine only reveal a cerebral hemorrhage as the cause of death without any further abnormalities. According to the on-call doctor, the detainee was at great risk of self-harm and she kept banging her head against the wall to attract attention.

In the search for the truth, the transsexual dancer Almandine Winter, the grieving partner of the deceased, becomes an important companion for the two investigators. Almandine is currently in her transition, her story and her manner move the two commissioners. In the meantime, the mood in Police Station 25 is heating up due to the internal investigations into the case. Displeasure and rejection against the chief inspector and his assistant in the Munich college spread, which makes the investigation extremely difficult and soon dangerous. The case is also a great burden for both of them, after all, the accused officers have to do with criminals, dealers, drug addicts and rioters in their daily work, which is a respectable and not easy achievement, not to mention the excessive payment .

The persistent inquiries of the two police officers finally lead to initial successes in the investigation. Andreas Meier, from the Munich police station 25, contacts the chief inspector, which does not go unnoticed by his colleagues. For fear that everything would be exposed and their professional career could be over, they want to make him untrustworthy. Plagued by various harassment and bullying attacks, Meier shoots himself before he can meet von Meuffels. This entails a suspension of the officials, whereupon they finally seem to cooperate with von Meuffels. They describe the events of the arrest of the victim, who had fought heavily. The arrested woman was restrained in the cell with handcuffs and ankle cuffs. For the officials, everything would have been a chain of unfortunate circumstances, they could only be accused of violating their duty of supervision.

Ultimately, von Meuffels succeeds in reconstructing a video of Meier's cell phone, which clearly shows how the victim is beaten and mistreated by the five officers in the sobering cell. But before, after weighing the evidence and the police merits of the accused, he had made a deal with them that he would let the investigation go well for them if they pay for Almandine Winter's operation and thus give her a new life. In the end, von Meuffels is left alone with his personal feelings of guilt. His assistant Anna Burnhauser has ended the cooperation with von Meuffels due to the grueling investigations against his own people.

criticism

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv writes: “Underpaid cops, red-light district, everyday transgender life - that is Munich too. In this milieu, the blue-blooded Prussian Hanns von Meuffels has to investigate his own colleagues. The fifth 'Polizeiruf 110' with Matthias Brandt is again a very special film. 'Death makes angels out of us all' is a difficult investigative thriller, a fast-paced, realistic drama, a powerful police film and a city portrait that is dedicated to the sediment of Munich society. The city pulsates, the traffic is noisy, everyday life is annoying, the noble hero curses more violently than Schimanski and yet there is hope for a person. "

The critic Christian Buß at spiegel.de says: “Transsexuals who earn money by stripping for physical remodeling. Patrolmen showing off their muscles. The Munich 'police call' goes deep into the world of gender constructions. A furious thriller about the end of male certainties. "

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm gave the best possible rating (thumbs up) and wrote: "Greatly played, the final is daring".

Josef Seitz from focus-online describes this crime thriller somewhat sarcastically : “There was a time when men were still men and they had eggs, and women were still women, and they had ovaries and breasts. Today, even in the police force, they are only called 'Eiermeier', so that policeman Andreas Meier can be distinguished from policewoman Jasmin Meier. No, dear ex-children who have grown up, our Sunday thriller in the First is no longer a fairy tale where in the end, if not all have died, the good guys stay alive and the crooks go to jail. "
