Before the start of the season there had been a change in the game mode, after which two separate championships were held each year. In the first half of the year the Torneo Metropolitano took place, the second half of the year was played in the Torneo Nacional. Both the Metropolitano and the Nacional determined a majority, so from 1967 there were two Argentine football champions per year. This mode was retained until 1985, when the way of playing in Europe was adapted and no longer played in the calendar year, but from summer to summer.
The Torneo Metropolitano was the first half-year championship. It began on March 3 and ended on August 6, 1967. First, two groups were formed, the two best-ranked teams met in two semi-finals. The two finalists were determined from these semifinals. In 1967 these were the Estudiantes de La Plata and the Racing Club . Estudiantes was ultimately able to prevail in the final in Buenos Aires and became Argentine champions for the first time in the club's history.
The Torneo Nacional was played with sixteen participants who each played against each other once in the league system. It began on September 8th and ended on December 17th, 1967. Qualified for the Nacional tournament were the six best-placed teams in the Torneo Metropolitano groups, as well as the four best representatives of the previously second-highest division.
At the end of the Torneo Nacional CA Independiente was able to prevail and was the first time since 1963 Argentine football champions.
