Almost half of the municipal area (47.2%) is forested, 37.6% of the area is used for agriculture, 7.5% is built-up and 3.5% is traffic area.

history

The first traces of settlement date from the younger Stone Age . In the 19th century, three barrows from the early Latène period with valuable burial objects were discovered. Weiskirchen is mentioned in a document for the first time in 1030.

Incorporations

As part of the regional and administrative reform in Saarland , the five previously independent communities of Weiskirchen, Konfeld, Rappweiler, Thailen and Weierweiler were combined to form the new community Weiskirchen on January 1, 1974.

Schimmelkopf wind farm

Weiskirchen is a station on the Saarland circular hiking trail and the Saar-Hunsrück climb . In addition, 4 km north of Weiskirchen on the state border with Rhineland-Palatinate is the second highest elevation in Saarland, the Schimmelkopf , on which four Enercon E-115 wind turbines were planned, built and operated by the Juwi company in 2014 and 2015 were taken. The plants each have a nominal output of 3.0 MW and should deliver a total annual yield of 12.3 GWh. A high ropes course in the Weiskirchen wildlife and hiking park has been expanding the tourist offer since 2012. Also, the health tourism is an important economic factor in the region. Weiskirchen is a climatic health resort and also a Kneipp health resort.

Culture and sights

  • In Rappweiler there is the "Weiskirchen-Rappweiler Wildlife and Hiking Park", whose population mainly consists of red deer. The information center of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park with a permanent exhibition is also located in the park .
