The Rheinaue Walsum nature reserve in the Walsum district of Duisburg and the city of Dinslaken forms the southern tip of the "Lower Lower Rhine" wetland zone. It extends on the right bank of the Rhine from the north port of Walsum ( Rhine kilometer 793) north to the mouth of the Emscher (Rhine kilometer 797.75) and in the north it also includes a smaller part on the left bank of the Rhine.

description

On its 521 hectares it offers refuge for numerous endangered animal and plant species. The area was partly created by subsidence due to coal mining and is part of the 503 hectare “Walsumer Grind”. The meadow landscape is determined by thorny hedges and the typical Lower Rhine head trees. So far, 187 different bird species have been identified as breeding birds, migrants and winter guests. Particularly striking are the up to 10,000 Arctic Bläss- and bean geese that use the winter the Rhine foreland as a resting and Äsungsplatz. Thanks to several nesting aids, storks have been breeding in the Rheinaue for several years. The young storks have not yet survived

As a local recreation area, the Rheinaue with its paths offers the opportunity to take long walks and observe the flora and fauna from specially erected shelters.

From the Alsumer Berg in the south (Rhine kilometer 788), which does not belong to the Rheinaue Walsum, one has a high-contrast view of the vast green foreland of the Rhine and the pulsating industry of the north of Duisburg. With the Rhine ferry Walsum-Orsoy the left bank of the Rhine can be reached quickly and easily.

Connection with other protected areas

The nature reserve is part of the EU bird sanctuary " Lower Lower Rhine ".
