Rolf Berger (born December 29, 1936 in Leipzig , † July 29, 2009 in Strausberg ) was a German officer, most recently in the rank of lieutenant general of the NVA . He was the last head of the Air Force / Air Defense Command of the National People's Army .

Life

The son of an electrician became a professional soldier after graduating from high school . In 1955 Berger joined the SED and the armed organs . From 1955 to 1958 he was an officer student at the Aviation School (later FAG-25) in Bautzen . After graduation, Berger served as a pilot in JG-7 until 1959 . From 1960 to 1961 he was deputy commander for political work in this squadron. After studying at the Friedrich Engels Military Academy in Dresden from 1961 to 1964, which he was able to finish at the top of his class with a special diploma from the Minister for National Defense , Berger served as head of air tactics / air shooting in JG-9 until 1965 . This position was followed by the service until 1968 as deputy commander for aeronautical training, before he was commander of JG-9 until 1973. In 1973 Berger's change to the Kommando LSK / LV of air forces of the NVA . There he was head of training for fighter pilots and fighter-bomber pilots until 1977. From 1977 to 1980 Berger served as deputy commander for fighter pilots in the staff of the 1st Air Defense Division in Cottbus .

Along with Sigmund Jähn , Eberhard Köllner and Eberhard Golbs, he was one of the candidates for the GDR space flight.

Berger completed his studies at the General Staff Academy of the USSR from 1980 to 1982 with a degree in military science. After his return he became commander of the 3rd Air Defense Division in Trollenhagen . Berger was named major general on March 1, 1984 . In 1986 he returned to the command of the LSK / LV. There, Berger was appointed as the successor to Manfred Barthel on February 1, 1986 as deputy head of LSK / LV and head of staff. On October 7, 1988, Berger was promoted to lieutenant general.

After Colonel General Wolfgang Reinhold passed in the course of the peaceful revolution in the GDR , Berger was appointed head of the LSK / LV command on December 1, 1989. His successor as Chief of Staff was Major General Günter Voigt . The function as head of the LSK / LV command was carried out by Lieutenant General Berger until the end of the GDR and the NVA.

Berger was accepted into the German Armed Forces on October 3, 1990, but only performed a civil advisory role for the air force.

Rolf Berger died in 2009 and was buried in the Protestant cemetery on Berliner Strasse in Strausberg .
