Rothenberg is a district of the Upper Franconian town of Seßlach in the Coburg district .

geography

Rothenberg is located about 18 kilometers west of Coburg on a southern slope above the Alster , a tributary of the Itz . The district road CO 6 connects the place with the neighboring Heilgersdorf , the district road CO 16 with Seßlach and Oberelldorf .

history

The first documentary mention was in 1297, when the Langheim monastery acquired the "Rotenberg" settlement from a small group of landlords. Later the monastery took over the whole of Rothenberg. The place belonged to the free monk villages of the monastery office Tambach.

In 1803, as a territorial part of the Bamberg Monastery, the Langheim Monastery and thus also its Tambach monastery was secularized and part of the Electorate of Bavaria . In January 1806, Count Joseph Carl took possession of the Tambacher Lande as an imperial county of Ortenburg-Tambach . In October 1806 the county was mediatized . From December 1806 to 1814, Rothenberg belonged to the Grand Duchy of Würzburg as part of the Tambacher Land . After its dissolution, the Tambach Lordship Court was assigned to the Mainkreis . In 1862 Rothenberg was incorporated into the newly created Bavarian district office in Staffelstein .

In 1875 the village had 118 inhabitants, 37 buildings and 21 houses. 103 people belonged to the parish of the Roman Catholic parish church in Seßlach, and their children attended school there. 15 citizens belonged to the parish of the Evangelical Lutheran parish church in Heilgersdorf. In 1925 the village had 135 inhabitants and 23 houses. 97 people belonged to the parish of the Roman Catholic parish church in Seßlach and 38 to that of the Evangelical Lutheran parish church in Heilgersdorf. In 1987 the village had 110 inhabitants and 25 houses with 33 apartments.

The Georg Kaiser sawmill was founded in 1922. The land consolidation took place from 1964 to 1978.

On July 1, 1972, the Staffelstein district was dissolved. Since then, Rothenberg has been part of the Coburg district . In the course of the Bavarian territorial reform , Rothenberg lost its independence as a municipality on May 1, 1978 and became part of the municipality of Seßlach.

Catholic branch church of St. Laurentius

The core of the Catholic branch church St. Laurentius dates from the 13th century, as evidenced by early Gothic building elements in the church tower on its two lower floors. From 1741, a poor state of construction led to an extensive renovation of the choir tower church . The entire north wall, parts of the western gable wall and the roof of the nave were renewed and a new gallery was installed. The church tower was raised by two masonry floors and given a domed roof. The furnishings include a high altar dating from the time of construction with the altarpiece of St. Laurentius .
