Rumpelstilzchen and Co (original title: Rumplcimprcampr ) is a Czech fairy tale film by Zdeněk Zelenka from 1997. Rumpelstilzchen and Co was produced by Česká televize . The main line of the film is based on the fairy tale Rumpelstiltskin by the Brothers Grimm , on Božena Němcová Rumpelstiltskin variant Karchen Martin and Pavol Dobšinský's Die Goldspinnerin . With this, Rumpelstilzchen & Co illustrates the fairy tales of the Aarne-Thompson-Index AaTh 500, with which the Grimm fairy tale The Three Spinners Aarne-Thompsen-Index, i.e. AaTh 501, is closely related. In addition, motifs from Hans Christian Andersen's The Princess and the Pea and the fairy tale motif of the false bride are woven into the Rumpelstiltskin film . The film was first shown in cinemas in the Czech Republic on 1997. The first performance in Germany took place on November 22, 1998 on the children's channel . In the English-speaking world the film is known as Rumpelstiltskin , in France as Nain Tracassin .

Prince and goat girl

Prince Hubertus loves the beautiful goat girl Maria. The happy lovers meet secretly in the forest. Meanwhile, King Valentine is worried in an exaggerated manner: He wants to retire, the bills of his kingdom overwhelm him, he complains that the unwilling son should finally marry a princess and take over the business. The prudent, wise, motherly queen knows how to gently soften her father's anger.

Marriage candidates?

Scammers internal drive frilly through the Kingdom: The little pretty "Princess Isabella" and her maid - in fact, mother and daughter in heiratsschwindlerischer intention. At the edge of the path they obtrusively ask the goat girl: "How is the prince of the country?" The only thing that would help, however, would be to eat mashed peas. This is overheard by a raven - who a short time later in a new guise as a colorfully dressed fool , human- size and thumb- size, jumps around in his corner of the forest and dances his row of rings. This is where the ridiculous mother-and-daughter team gets lost: And the forest rascal swindles them an alleged spell that the two want to use on the prince: Call midnight the raven - you'll be lucky on the third day. Then the jumping jack sends them to the castle:

No princess on the pea

As soon as the easily inflammable King Valentin hears from the impostors that they come from the golden Eldorado country, he wants to force Hubertus to marry the ugly beanpole. But the prudent mother-queen warns and admonishes a princess test on the pea. The royal dinner is completely out of joint: The scarecrows want to force Hubertus to eat pea porridge and declaim their raven saying: Hubertus, who prefers to watch his beloved goat girl with her vicious stepfather, is only irritated and added a little late , he knows the saying differently: If a bird flies around noon, happiness comes to you on the third day . King Valentine also knows a saying: The cockatoo, the cockatoo that opens and closes the butt hole. - The evening can no longer be saved - Hubertus says goodbye in a strange way. The next morning, King Valentin and his caring queen can watch in detail how the alleged "Princess Isabella" snores on the mountain of mattresses - despite the pea. Then the mother and daughter speak loudly about their betrayal. In anger, Valentin sends the women to the dungeon. So that the two do not get in the way of his plans, Rumpelstiltskin transforms them from the black raven into rats, with the unsolvable task of being released from their animal form only by a good deed. The little man dances in the corner of the forest, trilling:

Oh how good that nobody knows that my name is Rumpelstiltskin, that I can fly as a raven and have a double life.

Another time he sings:

Don't be called Alexander, and not Welomyr, not even Celsius, I'll tell you, not called Alpha or Beta or Caesar, not called Dietrich or Wüterich , nor am I the Tsar. Ha, ha, ha - how well nobody knows that my name is Rumpelstiltskin. My name is Rumpelstiltskin, but the king doesn't know what my real name is. - Everything is going very well and so I sing mightily - trallalla - trallalla.

Meanwhile, Hubertus's clever mother has once looked through the telescope and sees with joy in the distance how Hubertus and a beautiful golden-haired girl are bathing in the lake . But then an evil farmer's trampling disturbs the idyll: Maria's stepfather beats up and even gives Hubertus a black eye. The queen decides to take the problem in hand: the next day she sends her son on a five-day trip. She drives to the yard of Maria's brutal stepfather . She feels the rough man on the tooth what he is doing for Maria: like an apparition from the unconscious, the colorful goblin approaches and tells the rascal that Maria can spin straw into gold . And he starts to brag about it in front of the queen. Unimpressed by this assertion, the queen takes the beautiful girl with her protectively. She has decided to introduce King Valentin Maria as a splendid princess and to make her son and his beloved happy: To this end, she stages Maria as a princess and the pea , with the beautiful girl finally getting the bruises she got from her stepfather benefit once. Maria also looks delightful in the light blue lace dress. Everything works out wonderfully and King Valentin is also enthusiastic about the beautiful princess “Marie-Luise von Lohenhohe”; But there is one difficulty: Maria cannot lie, and after a short time she has revealed her true origins to the old king: Now good advice is dear. Valentin wants to set an example for marriage swindlers. Then the queen of gold spinning remembers.

Gold mills

The gold enthusiast Valentin likes to respond to this. The weeping Maria is locked in the tower and the queen puzzles - for the first time at a loss - how the matter can be saved. During the night, the colorful Schrat appears to Maria , who introduces itself to her as “little happiness” and “happiness for those in love”. He offers himself to spin the straw into gold for her, but she has to promise to give him whatever he wants in a year as queen. Maria made the promise innocently and by necessity. She falls asleep. The encounter seems like a dream to her: But the next morning, to the astonishment of Mary and to the joyful surprise of Valentine, the straw turned into gold. To Valentine's sorrow, however, the beautiful can no longer remember how gold spinning works. But the happiness of Hubertus and Maria is complete, and the two celebrate their wedding in a splendid celebration. At first amazed, then pleasantly the old royal couple watches as the children dance polka in the castle . Hubertus and Maria do not forget to take the beloved goat away from their stepfather either.

The "funny" name game about all or nothing

The royal couple has received a beautiful little heir to the throne, Prince Valentin. But then all of a sudden the year of Rumpelstiltskin is over and he demands the child from Maria in return. The prince is supposed to be Rumpelstiltskin's successor and not just anybody can do that, he needs a child like that. Maria is horrified, but Hubertus and his parents cannot help either. The vain goblin can ultimately be won with a game. If Maria guesses his name, she can keep the child. The jumping jack will return at the prince's birthday party next day. Hubertus suspects in which corner of the forest the insane little man is hiding. He also succeeds in listening to him, but the two rat-shaped impostors betray him. The angry magic bullet leaves Hubertus tied up. The rat ladies decide to help and free Hubertus, so they regain their human form and Hubertus can rush to the court with the name . He's almost too late. The colorful goblin has already vanished all the birthday guests: But then Maria can throw his real name at him: "Rumpelstiltskin from the black raven". Prince Valentin is saved. Everyone is happy and the evil goblin has to look for other fields of activity; and the birthday waltz can finally be danced happily.

Jaroslav Kepka the magical Rumpelstiltskin, whose changing character here alternates between raven, thumb-sized jumping jack and ghostly fool's picture, also played demonic beings in other fairy tale films: The Magic Book , The Magic Raven Rumborak and Competition in the Castle . The miller's daughter, Andrea Elsnerová is also known from the fairy tale film Elixír and Halibela and her prince is Ivan Hora , who played a raven brother in The Seven Ravens .

Film horizon

The pair constellation of the poor goat girl and the prince reflects the classic fairy tale film relationship of Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella : A self-confident but poor girl and a prince who loves to hunt are in love; - here in Rumpelstiltskin & Co. , however, the agreement between the girl and the prince is given right at the beginning of the film. Although the goatherd has to live with an unspeakable stepfather who has nothing in mind but to exploit the girl, Maria has not lost her sense of herself, and so she even tells King Valentine in the face where she comes from and how poor she is is. However, this has fatal consequences for the time being, because the royal family falls into the clutches of Rumpelstiltskin due to the king's enthusiasm for gold. Two impostors, a scheming mother-and-daughter couple, in which Cschenbrödel's stepmother and her daughter Dorchen are reminiscent of afar, show the potential danger of King Valentine, being too easily dazzled by the wealth he hopes for. Because how much the king would like to believe in the rich Eldorado , the golden fairy-tale land, where, apart from Voltaire's Candide , no one has yet been. And without the warning look of the royal mother, the intrigues of power could easily set a trap here. The relationship between the beautiful goat girl and her kid is experienced in a similar way to that in Rumpelstiltskin & Co. in Grimm's fairy tales One-Eyes, Two-Eyes and Three-Eyes . Also in the Russian fairy tale film Fire, Water and Trumpets , the helpful goat Weißchen plays an important role in the rescue of the goatherd Aljona.

In the design of the Rumpelstiltskin itself, the Rumpelstiltskin film deviates significantly from the Grimm version: In Grimm , Božena Němcová , Pavol Dobšinský and other Rumpelstiltskin variants, the demon is described more as a dark gnome, similar to the mountain spirit made of snow-white and rose-red or similar to a bad brother the Snow White dwarf . In any case, the origin of these dwarfish, sometimes helpful spirits is in a very dark otherworld . Here in the film, however, Rumpelstiltskin is a colorful jumping jack - more like a mad carnival fool than a dark dwarf; And this Rumpelstiltskin derives its frightening effect more from his neurotic self-centeredness, which also results in his seductiveness to want to hear his name out of vanity. The magic taboo of attribution, which is characteristic of Rumpelstiltskin, is disenchanted a little in this cinematic implementation. But Rumpelstilzchen & Co has reached a particularly high level of rhythm, intellectual wit and tempo, creating a fairytale atmosphere that already seems to point to the fairy tale film The Clever Farmer's Daughter . This manifests itself in Rumpelstiltskin & Co. z. B. in the ironic aspect of the loving, but also very indulgent treatment of the queen with the all too gullible king. Here all shades between determining and protecting are given and amusingly differentiated. Or the spontaneity with which Maria gives the impostors the pea pulp story is extremely funny.

Music and picture film

The fairy tale film music by Rumpelstilzchen & Co. lives from the dance composition motifs of Johann Strauss and his sons, especially Johann Strauss the Younger: waltzes , quadrilles especially but also the polka with which Maria and Hubertus open their wedding dance in the rural tradition. The imagery of the film is inspired by the Rococo images of Schäfer Idyllen of François Boucher : in particular, in the staging of scenes between the Lieb Goatherd and Prince. The sad everyday world of Mary with her hard-hearted stepfather is reminiscent of the pictures by Artuš Scheiner for the fairy tale The Three Spinners, which is close to Rumpelstiltskin
