São Paulo is a district and a former Portuguese municipality ( freguesia ) in the 1st Bairro of the capital Lisbon . The 0.41 km² district is dominated by the Cais do Sodré train station and its surroundings, as well as the steep streets and alleys to the north. The name São Paulo , the Portuguese version of the name of the Apostle Paul , comes from the church of the same name, which is located on Praça de São Paulo in the parish.
In 2013, as part of an administrative reform, the municipalities of São Paulo, Encarnação , Santa Catarina and Mercês became the new municipality of Misericórdia .

São Paulo has its own coat of arms. The red sword stands for Saint Paul , namesake of the freguesia. The fountain stands for the same on the Praça de São Paulo , which is also located in the municipality. The oars, the waves and the red fish give an indication of the former common occupation in the community, fishing on the adjoining Tagus .

Sights and other facilities
In the Freguesia São Paulo you will find the Igreja do Corpo Santo and one of the oldest palaces in the Portuguese capital, the Palácio Valada-Azambuja , sometimes also Palácio dos Condes de Azambuja . This palace, commissioned by the Counts of Azambuja , was built in the 16th century and rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1755 . The building underwent numerous changes, especially in the 19th century, and since 1925 the palace has housed the editorial office of the newspaper A Lucta . Today one of the Lisbon libraries is in the building on Largo do Calhariz .
Directly on the main axis of the Freguesia to the west, on Avenida 24 de Julho , is the Mercado da Ribeira ("waterfront market") with an area of around 10,000 m². The first construction of the market hall dates back to 1882. On June 7, 1893, the east side of the building was badly damaged in a fire. Numerous conversions and extensions have taken place to this day. Since 2001 the market no longer serves as a wholesale market, but as a market for the daily needs of all kinds of food. The upper floor offers space for cultural events. In the Mercado da Ribeira found, for example regularly place one of the largest Lisbon book markets.
In São Paulo there is also one of the three Lisbon funiculars , the Elevador da Bica or Ascensor da Bica . The funicular, designed by Raul Mesnier and opened in 1892, overcomes a height of 45 meters (gradient 19.1 percent) between Largo do Calhariz and Rua de São Paulo over a distance of 260 meters. The Elevador, like the Elevador da Glória and the Elevador da Lavra , is one of the tourist attractions in Lisbon.

The most important traffic junction in the western city center is in the Freguesia of São Paulo at Praça Duque da Terceira , the Cais do Sodré train station .
