The twelfth season of the German crime series SOKO Leipzig celebrated its premiere on November 16, 2012 on ZDF . The finale was broadcast on March 22, 2013.

The episodes of the season were first broadcast on the Friday 9:15 pm slot.

As in previous seasons, three episodes in the length of a feature film (90 minutes instead of the usual 45 minutes of an episode) were produced with Getriebe (1) , Getriebe (2) and Das Monster . Thereby forming gears (1) and gears (2) a 180-minute double episode.

An anonymous caller forces Chief Detective Jan Maybach to deal with old cases in which he has investigated. The extortionist has distributed several bombs in and around Leipzig and the investigator is supposed to deal with what happened after the case was closed in the places where he was once open to investigations. While her colleague runs through the city and tries to defuse one bomb after the other and has to answer questions, the other SOKO commissioners are looking for the blackmailer, but no one suspects that the final showdown will take place in the police headquarters.

When the real estate agent Marko Wild is murdered, the SOKO has to investigate the Leipzig housing market. The two find out that each of their neighbors seems to have a secret, but a specific motive for murder is still missing. It is Peggy Linde, who had swapped jobs with her colleague at short notice and is now in great danger because the serial killer continues to pursue her. Ultimately, however, Jan Maybach manages to save her at the last second, but the perpetrator manages to flee.

In the end, Jan Maybach managed to save Peggy Linde at the last second, but the perpetrator managed to flee. The investigation is in full swing and the SOKO finds out about Jochen Krollmann, an animal keeper who lives with his disabled mother. The team develops the plan to lure Krollmann into a trap with the help of Chief Detective Ina Zimmermann, but Krollmann gets wind of the plan and flees. While the police are desperately looking for him, he is still after Peggy Linde. He succeeds in overpowering Frank Seefeld and kidnapping those he is protecting. In the meantime, Jan Maybach and Leni Trautzschke, completely exasperated, decide to cancel the wedding because of the burdens surrounding the case. When the guests have already left and the two have come to rest, they change their minds.
