When the handicapped pensioner Harald Lepper from Detective Inspector Trautzschke's neighborhood is murdered, suspicion falls on the civilian service provider Roger Schipanek, because he seems to have known about the pensioner's assets. Lepper, who was always a loyal supporter of the GDR regime, had a clash with Josef Dahlmann, one of the persecuted by this regime. During the investigation, the SOKO boss realizes that he hardly knows anything about his neighbors and is reminded of his GDR experiences.

When the official at the immigration office, Marcus Trautmann, is murdered, the Nigerian asylum seeker Beko Falana is suspected, who is also fleeing from the SOKO officials and thus becoming the main suspect for them. The SOKO is called to a failed supermarket robbery. The perpetrators shot a money courier and fled without prey. The case reminds Chief Detective Trautzschke of an unexplained attack from 12 years ago, because the same supermarket was attacked and Eric Bloch's father was shot in that supermarket. With the help of police chief Meike Schwarz, the SOKO succeeds in identifying a perpetrator, but when one of the perpetrators is found dead, the case takes a different turn.

The SOKO investigators are called when shots are fired at the GDR execution site on the day of the open memorial and the teacher Anna Daum is found dead. The commissioners are puzzled as it is not clear whether it was suicide or murder. Two witnesses, Erwin Mauser and Michael Seidenspinner, claim it was suicide, but the team isn't sure how trustworthy the two men are. Ultimately, a dark GDR secret is leading the investigation in the right direction.
