geography

Saint-Philippe is located in the extreme south-east of the island and borders the communes of Saint-Joseph and Sainte-Rose . Most of the community population lives along the coast.

History and administration

The first residents of today's municipality settled in the district of Le Baril from 1760 . Most of these came from the neighboring parish of St. Benoit . The construction of the first chapel began in 1822 and was completed in 1834.

The community was founded in 1830 . On January 1, 1848, when slavery was abolished in Réunion , 1002 "free citizens" out of a total population of 1930 were registered in the municipality. As the only municipality in Réunion, Saint-Philippe does not belong to any of the island's municipal associations. She left the CIVIS association in 2002.

education

There is a college in Saint-Philippe , but not a lycée .

Economy and tourism

For a long time, the cultivation of cloves, nutmeg and fishing played a crucial role in the municipality of Saint-Philippe. In the middle of the 19th century, these cultures were replaced by vanilla and sugar cane. Two sugar mills (Baril and de la Trinité) were built in the municipality during this time.

In addition to sugar cane, the cultivation of palm heart palms and spiced vanilla also play a role today . There is also a bottling of mineral water in the community.

Compared to other communes of Réunion, tourism in Saint-Philippe is of little importance. According to the agricultural orientation, a “spice and smell trail” has been created. In the forest -like Forêt de Mare Longue you can also get to know native plant species and the special ecosystem of the subtropical wet forest on a nature trail.

On the coast, the Cap Méchant ("evil cape") is a popular destination. It is characterized by bizarre formations of cooled lava and was a dreaded point for seafarers in earlier times: Due to the irregular coastal structure, which also often changed due to volcanic activities, navigation here was difficult and numerous ship accidents occurred.

Attractions

  • The cooled lava flows from the volcanic eruptions of the Piton-de-la-Fournaise volcano in the Le Tremblet district .
  • Various hiking trails lead to the active Piton de la Fournaise volcano.

Sports

  • Sainte-Philippe is the starting point of the La Diagonale des Fous ultramarathon (German: the crossing of the crazy ).
  • Football club: ASSP - Association Sportive de Sainte-Philippe .
