Salmerón is a central Spanish place and a municipality ( municipio ) with only 157 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the province of Guadalajara in the autonomous region of Castile-La Mancha . The place was on the Ruta de la Lana , a medieval trade and pilgrimage route; the municipality now belongs to the sparsely populated region of the Serranía Celtibérica .
Location and climate
The almost 825 m high place Salmerón is in the east of the Alcarria , a landscape in the north of the southern part of the Iberian plateau ( meseta ) . The provincial capital Guadalajara is about 80 km (driving distance) to the west. The climate in winter is temperate, while in summer it is warm to hot; the rather low amounts of precipitation (approx. 425 mm / year) fall - with the exception of the almost rainless summer months - distributed over the whole year.

Due to the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting loss of jobs, the population of the municipality has declined sharply since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ).
economy
Agriculture was only possible to a very limited extent in the mountainous and rocky landscape; Therefore, the focus was primarily on livestock farming , whose durable products (cheese, sausage, wool and animal skins) could be exchanged for other goods at traveling traders.
history
There is no evidence of Celtic , Roman , Visigothic and even Islamic - Moorish settlement. An armed reconquest ( reconquista ) of Salmerón therefore probably did not take place. Together with the neighboring towns Alcocer and Valdeolivas owned the place for manorial (señorio) of Infante Juan Manuel , who on a hill near the village a castle around the year 1325 (castillo) was built, but in the time of the Spanish War of Succession (1701-1714 ) was destroyed.
Attractions
- Apart from the surrounding wall, no remains of the castle have survived. In its place is today's cemetery (cementerio) of the place.
- The main attractions of the place are the Plaza Mayor and the side streets with their pillared houses (soportales).
- The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was founded in the 14th and 15th centuries. Built in the 17th century; However, the current condition largely corresponds to the new buildings and renovations of the 16th and 17th centuries. Century. The three stylistically designed portals bear witness to the history of the building. In the single-nave interior, but with side chapels, there was a representative altarpiece (retablo) , which was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).
- Also from the former Augustinian - Convention only are residues.
