Beddingen is one of the total of 31 districts of the independent city of Salzgitter in Lower Saxony , located in the northeast . Beddingen belonged to the Wolfenbüttel district until March 31, 1942 and became part of the city of Watenstedt-Salzgitter through an administrative act on April 1, 1942. On January 23, 1951, it was officially renamed Salzgitter .

geography

Road bridge over the canal

The district is one of the so-called " canal villages" because it is located directly on the east bank of the Salzgitter canal . Beddingen is connected to Sauingen by the Beddingen Bridge , built in 1964 and only open to pedestrians and cyclists . Beddingen is just north of Industriestraße Nord , which connects Salzgitter-Lebenstedt with the important companies. The port connection railway runs through the town center of Bedding.

history

Beddingen is mentioned in a document as early as the eighth century as "Bettingen". Beddingen is mentioned by name in the context of a donation from the Saxon Prince Odiltag and his wife Wentelsuint to the Fulda monastery in 780. There twenty goods of the Liergau are mentioned, including Bettingen.

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a silver combination of sword and anchor on a green background. The sword stands as a symbol for the court and reminds us that Beddingen was a central court for centuries - at the latest from 1402 and until 1807. The anchor stands for the Beddinger Hafen, located on the Salzgitter branch canal , the largest inland port in Lower Saxony. The color silver, which symbolizes the water here, also refers to the location of the place on the canal. The basic color green represents agriculture, which for a long time formed the economic basis for the place.

The coat of arms was adopted on May 18, 1999 by the citizens' assembly as the local coat of arms of Salzgitter-Beddingen.

Economy and Infrastructure

There are some large industrial companies in Beddingen and the immediate vicinity of the town. The VW plant in Salzgitter , which opened in 1970, is one of the largest employers in the region and produces around half of all engines in the VW Group .

With the American company Cargill , another large company is based here, which  uses the Beddingen location with its good infrastructure - especially its proximity to the A 39 . The same applies to Salzgitter AG (formerly Stahlwerke Peine-Salzgitter AG, previously Hermann-Göring-Werke ), which is connected to the German waterway network by the branch canal .

Beddingen has the port of Beddingen, in the vicinity of which various companies have settled, including a tank farm that is supplied via the Mittelland / Stich Canal.
