Geographical location

It is located in the north of the Sétubal district and on the eastern bank of the Tagus Bay in Portugal. The capital Lisbon is 12 km to the west as the crow flies . To the northeast is the municipality of São Francisco and to the southeast the city of Montijo . East of the municipality is the Base Aérea do Montijo air force base.

history

There are no accurate historical records of Samouco. Samouco was first mentioned in 1241. In the 15th century Samouco, Aldeia Galega and Sarilhos formed the municipality of Santa Maria de Sebonha. In the same century, the municipality was dissolved by the Santiagoorden and the new municipality Aldeia Galega was founded, to which Alcochete now also belonged.

A low death rate was recorded between 1646 and 1650. Because of this, and the abundant agricultural production and fishing, many people came to Samouco from other parts and even from abroad during the 17th century. The immigrants came from Viseu , Lamego , Torres Novas , Oliveira de Frades , Setúbal , Barreiro , Lavradio , Coimbra , Galicia and Genoa . The workers and immigrants married the women. Also Fidalgos lived in Samouco. On the area of the current air force base there used to be mansions and on their walls one could find corresponding coats of arms. There is evidence of the property of the Counts of S. Vicente and the Count of Távora. The latter saw Samouco as a place of refuge. Samouco was a place where agriculture was practiced in the 16th century. So were oranges , apricots , figs , wheat and wine grown. The products are grown, loaded onto small boats and shipped across the Tejob Bay. The products were offered in the Lisbon markets . Even then there were salt pans in Samouco , and the salt obtained was also exported with the maritime expansion of Portugal.

Religions

Church of Blasius de Sebaste (pt: Igreja São Braz ) of Samouco at night

The village church bears the name of Blasius von Sebaste (Irgeja São Braz). Exact data on the construction of the church do not exist. The church was first mentioned in the 16th century when the Santiagoorden visited the church. The records of the visits showed that the church ceiling was painted and there were azulejos on the walls depicting scenes from the life of Blasius de Sebaste. The church was damaged in the great earthquake in 1755 . Over time, the church has been renovated several times, including the altar in 1919 .
