history

The area around Sarroux shows traces of settlement since the Neolithic Age . Gallic - Roman cult sites such as the nearby Margerides testify to a lively exchange between these cultures during antiquity . A church has been documented in Sarroux since 507 and a minting workshop was established in this place in the 7th century. Until the great bloodletting caused by the Hundred Years' War and the plague in the 14th century, the region's population had grown steadily, so the Knights von Bort built the Château Pierrefitte to protect the region in the 15th century . But world historical events such as the French Revolution and the two world wars had a negative impact on the development of Sarroux. With the construction of the Bort-les-Orgues dam in 1952, the municipality then lost important agricultural land, roads, rail links and important buildings, but in return it gained great tourist attraction.

On January 1, 2017, the municipality of Sarroux merged with Saint-Julien-près-Bort to form the Commune nouvelle Sarroux-Saint Julien and has been part of this municipality ever since.
