The Schafberg ( 1782  m above sea level ) is a prominent mountain in the Salzkammergut Mountains in the border region of Salzburg and Upper Austria . Its summit is accessible to tourists with the Schafbergbahn and is entirely in Salzburg.

Schafbergbahn

The Schafbergbahn , a cog railway, runs from St. Wolfgang (Schafbergbahnhof) via the Schafbergalpe (stop at 1363  m ) to the mountain station at 1732  m . The railway is 5.85 km, the difference in altitude is 1188  m , the journey takes about 35 minutes. The Schafbergbahn is only operated from the beginning of May to the end of September.

The construction work on the Schafbergbahn began in April 1892. The railway was opened in 1893 and ended the chair carrier profession in St. Wolfgang. On the occasion of the 90th anniversary on June 4, 1983, the foundation stone was laid for the new construction of the reception building, which was opened on June 14, 1986. The waiting room was enlarged and the departure and arrival platforms separated. The previous butt tracks were lengthened and connected to a pull-out track by a switch, which enables an additional set to be parked. The construction costs amounted to around 10 million schillings.

The Schafbergbahn, the hotel and the Wolfgangseeschifffahrt have been operated by Salzkammergutbahn GmbH since 2005 , which were sold by ÖBB to Salzburg AG (formerly Stadtwerke / SAFE) on February 9, 2006 .

Huts

On the summit of the Schafberg, Wolfgang Grömmer, innkeeper at the Hotel Weißes Rößl in St. Wolfgang, built Austria's first mountain hotel in 1862–64 with the Hotel Schafbergspitze . In 1889 the Kaiser Franz Josef Reitweg was laid out with cement steps suitable for riding . Its oldest and largest component, at the time owned by the Salzkammergut-Lokalbahn-Aktien-Gesellschaft , burned down completely on September 30, 1906. The Himmelspforthütte is located next to the hotel (private, daily operation). The Schafbergalm is located at the western, lower end of the summit area.

Amateur radio converter

An amateur radio relay was installed on the Schafbergspitze until September 28, 2018 and was operated by FIRAC Austria (railway radio amateurs ). The amateur radio call sign was OE2XBB and the transmission frequency was 439.200 MHz. The relay could be heard far into the Bavarian region.
