Shame of Basel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The game between FC Basel (FCB) and FC Zurich (FCZ) on the last match day of the 2005/06 season on May 13, 2006 as part of the Swiss Football Championship is called the shame of Basel . With a goal in the last minute of the three-minute stoppage time for the 2-1 away win for FCZ, the Zurich team challenged their opponent for the championship title, which they had already believed to be safe. This was followed by a storm by Basel hooligans who attacked FCZ players, among others.

Starting position

In the game, the two contenders for the Swiss championship title in 2006 met. FC Basel had topped the table of the Swiss Super League from the sixth to the penultimate (35th) round. FC Zurich was three points behind, but they had the better goal difference. Because of this constellation, FC Basel needed at least one draw to defend the championship titles of 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 and to achieve a hat trick . FC Zurich, on the other hand, needed to win the first championship since the 1980/81 season at the Basel “ Joggeli ”. The favorite role was FC Basel, who had remained undefeated in the previous 59 home games and had not lost any of the three previous duels with FCZ in the current season: a 2-1 home win for Basel on July 30, 2005 was followed by a 4: 2 victory on October 16, 2005 and a 1: 1 on February 12, 2006 in Zurich's Letzigrund .

Course of the game

Aggression and physical effort were great. After five minutes, FCZ player César had to be replaced due to an injury after a collision with Reto Zanni (FCB). After about 15 minutes, FCZ had their first chance to score when Gökhan Inler forced Basel goalkeeper Pascal Zuberbühler to make a save. The first chance for Basel had Zanni, who aimed over the goal from 11 meters after a free kick by Mladen Petrić .

In the 28th minute, Zurich had to make a second substitution due to an injury because Raffael was unable to continue playing due to a thigh problem. A few minutes later, Alhassane Keita scored the opening goal for the guests. In the last quarter of an hour of the first half, FCB had three options, but always failed because of Zurich's goalkeeper Leoni or, immediately before the break, against FCZ defense chief Iulian Filipescu . In the 72nd minute, the Basel team scored the equalizer with a free kick directly converted by Petrić from around 22 meters away. The three-minute stoppage time was almost over when Zurich defender Florian Stahel hit a cross inwards, which the former Romanian international Filipescu converted in the six-yard box to make it 1: 2.

Riots

Immediately after the final whistle, Basel hooligans stormed onto the field and chased FCZ scorers Iulian Filipescu and Alhassane Keita, among others.

The riots then continued outside the stadium and spread towards the city center. A large police presence went against rioters well into the night. Several people had to be admitted to hospital injured and there were numerous arrests. The approximately 500 FCZ fans who traveled with them were able to start their journey home unmolested in the special train to Zurich.

The riots left 115 injured and property damage of more than 400,000 francs .

Punish

A few weeks after the game, the first judgments were made by the disciplinary committee of the Swiss Football League .

FC Basel was sentenced to play the first two home games of the 2006/07 season in front of empty ranks and to leave the entire sector D (the "Muttenzerkurve") closed in the three subsequent home games. In addition, a fine of 80,000 francs was imposed.

All in all, it was the toughest punishment that had ever been pronounced for a Swiss club. In the verdict, it is expressly pointed out that the host association cannot be charged with fault, intent or gross negligence. The judgment is based exclusively on the conduct of FC Basel in breach of duty due to deficiencies in the organization. Far too few stewards were deployed who could not prevent the square storm, while the police at that time were almost exclusively occupied with guarding the guest sector. In addition, the punishment was exacerbated by the fact that on December 2, 2002, during a home game against the other Zurich club Grasshoppers (4: 5), there were riots in the "Muttenzerkurve", which then remained closed in one of the following home games.

The visiting club FC Zurich was fined 30,000 francs for “improper behavior by its fans”.

In November 2008, the Basel criminal court convicted 26 people (25 men and one woman) who were actively involved in the riots inside and outside the stadium. The maximum sentences were conditional imprisonment of up to twelve months and conditional fines of up to 210 daily rates with gross negligence. Among those convicted was a 25-year-old who was fined only for participating in the riots, but not for assaulting the Zurich top scorer Iulian Filipescu. The court had dropped this accusation because the defendant encountered an aggressively defending player in his attack and suffered a broken rib himself.

Effects

The shame of Basel formed the starting point for a broad public discussion in Switzerland on how to deal with violent football fans , hooligans and rowdy brothers in the context of sporting events in general.

As a result of this discussion, a so-called "Hooligan Concordat" came into force on January 1, 2010. The intercantonal concordat enables state measures to be taken against violent criminals in the context of sporting events and defines, among other things, the carrying and use of pyrotechnics as violence within the meaning of the concordat.
