The Castle Mill Wickrath was a water mill with an undershot water wheel at the upper reaches of the Niers in Mönchengladbach District Wickrath in the administrative district of Dusseldorf .
geography
Schlossmühle Wickrath is located on the right side of the Niers, at Hochstadenstrasse 113, in the Mönchengladbach district of Wickrath. Above was the Wickrathberger mill , below the Wickrath paper mill . The area on which the mill building stands is at a height of approx. 63 m above sea level . In terms of urban planning, it is located in the historical area of Wickrath, directly on the east side of the castle park of the Wickrath Stud .
Waters
The Niers (GEWKZ 286) in its old river bed supplied numerous mills with water for centuries until the river was straightened . The Niers rises in Kuckum , a district of the city of Erkelenz . The Niers has a total length of 117.668 km and a total catchment area of 1,380.630 km 2 up to its confluence with the Meuse near Gennep (Netherlands) . The source is 73 m above sea level. NN , the mouth at 9 m above sea level. NN . The Niersverband is responsible for the care and maintenance of the water .
history
The Wickrath Castle Mill was first mentioned in 1322 as moelen to Wickerode . In 1490 the mill was named as the houysmoelen of the Lords of Wickrath. The grinding mill , which the rulers also used as a ban mill , was later also used as an oil mill and a wage mill.
The existing mill building was built in 1720. After the French era , the mill came into private ownership. In the middle of the 19th century the mill was in the service of the Wickrath leather factory . In the last few years before it was closed in 1950, the mill worked again as a grinding mill. Today the building has been converted for residential use.

Monument entry
The entry of the former castle mill in Wickrath in the monuments list of the city of Mönchengladbach was made on December 4, 1984 under the number H 012.
The two-storey brick building consists of a main structure with a gable roof , which is arranged in an east-west direction, but which is hipped to the west. Built in the beginning of the 18th century. On the left, in continuation of the main structure, there is an annex, slightly recessed, with the through-gate passage over a bridge over the Niers. This two-story structure also has a hipped roof on the left.
