Waters

The Niers (GEWKZ 286) in its old river bed supplied numerous mills with water for centuries until the river was straightened . The Niers rises in Kuckum , a district of the city of Erkelenz . The Niers has a total length of 117.668 km and a total catchment area of 1,380.630 km 2 up to its confluence with the Meuse near Gennep (Netherlands) . The source is 73  m above sea level. NN , the mouth at m above sea level. NN . The Niersverband is responsible for the care and maintenance of the water .

history

The Broichmühle was first mentioned in a document in 1315. The molendinum in Damme belonged to the St. Vith Abbey and was operated as an undercut grain mill. It was a spell mill for the Gladbach area and had different names over the years. So the mill was also called Abtsmühle , Bruchmühle , Dammer Mühle , Corstgens Mühle and Nerscher Mühle . For decades there were disputes over mill rights with the neighboring districts of Neersen , Willich , and Schiefbahn .

In 1663 the Broichmühle was expanded into an oil mill . After the Seven Years' War (1756–1763), the abbot Ambrosius Specht had the mill completely rebuilt in 1765. In the course of secularization , the mill remained in French ownership and was not auctioned off - like other mills. In 1815 the mill became the property of the Prussian state . In 1818 the mill was used as a flour mill, oil mill and tinder mill. Mill buildings that were driven by water wheels now stood on both sides of the Niers .

After a fire in 1823, the spinning mill from the Zoppenbroich mill was relocated to the Broich mill . In 1827 the mill was expanded to include a steam engine with 11 hp . The grain milling process was preserved in parallel. In addition to the grinding mill and cotton spinning mill , an arms factory was also operated around 1839 . With the Niersregulierung in 1935, the water power was lost and it was switched to electric drive. In 1980 the mill was stopped and in 1998 the building was closed. Today the Broichmühlenweg and the millstone in front of the Priorshaus in Neuwerk are reminiscent of the once busy Broichmühle. On this stone is the inscription : This stone is supposed to be a memory of four Neuwerker mills .
