The Schwabe family in Basel
The Basel family Schwabe was founded by the brothers Benno , Hugo (1847–1899) and Alwin (1852–1923) Schwabe from Hanau (Hesse) and Frankfurt am Main , all of whom were naturalized in Basel between 1887 and 1891. In 1868 Benno took over the Schweighauser'sche publishing bookstore and printing company in Basel, which he continued under his own name (today Schwabe AG ). Hugo acquired the liberal daily newspaper Schweizerischer Volksfreund (from 1888 National-Zeitung ) in 1877 and from 1892 also worked as director of the Basel City Theater. Some of the descendants were also active in publishing, according to Hansrudolf, who founded Pharos-Verlag in 1958. Benno's son Max (1874-1943) was a lawyer and in 1931 was elected President of the High Court of the Canton of Basel-Landschaft . His younger brother Julius emerged as a symbol researcher.
