The Schwarza , also called the Black Bach , is a southwest and orographically left tributary of the Lüder from the Vogelsberg in Hesse.

The Schwarza, which in sections is also called Waagbach (Waaggraben) and Ahlbach, flows northwest parallel to the Lüder. It rises in the Grebenhain district northwest of Oberwald (also) on the Herchenhainer Höhe at an altitude of about 682 m.

Course of water

In a predominantly northeastern direction it flows through Grebenhain , past Vaitshain , through Nösberts-Weidmoos and Steinfurt (Herbstein) towards Steigertal.

It flows into the Lüder between Steinfurt and Blankenau near the border between the Vogelsberg district and the Fulda district on the former Hessian- Prussian state border between Zahmen and Blankenau.

In the vernacular of (Blankenau, Hainzell and Kleinlüder ), “Black River” or “Scharza” has been used since the Middle Ages for the “Lüder” between Blankenau via Hainzell to the (district boundary) Kleinlüder.

  • The Schwarza (Lüder) has no connection to the Schwarza of the same name , which is a tributary of the Altefeld .
  • North of Zahmen and south of Blankenau lies the 454 m high Steiger, from which the vernacular derived the name “Steigertal” or “Steier” early on.
