The championship was played for the first time in a new mode. Instead of a qualifying round and a final round, there was only a normal round format. In addition, only eight instead of ten teams competed in the National League A (NLA). Everyone competes against each other in two home and two away games, so 28 rounds are played. The first placed will be Swiss champions, while the last placed will be relegated to the National League B (NLB). In addition to the Swiss champions, according to the UEFA five-year ranking, the runner-up is also qualified for the UEFA Women's Champions League for the first time .

The former series champions FC Zurich Women secured their 21st championship title after the defending champions, FC Neunkirch , withdrew from the championship. In second place, FC Basel qualified for the UEFA Women's Champions League for the first time. The FC Aarau , who had risen only the only one due to the withdrawal of FC Neunkirch, rose after a season again in the NLB.

The 2017/18 season of the National League B (NLB) formed a transition season, as only twelve teams participated in this season (two additional relegated teams from the NLA). Since the league is to include ten teams again from the 2018/19 season, four teams are relegated as an exception (two more than usual).

The twelve teams play against each other in a home and an away game. This means that 22 games are played. As in the NLA, the final rounds (promotion and relegation games) have been abolished. At the end of the 22 rounds, the first place rider will be promoted to the NLA, while the last four placed will be relegated to the 1st division .

The Servette FC Chênois Féminin - the previous FF Chênois, which had been independent from the CS Chênois since 2012 and had now joined the Servette FC organization - rose to the NLA at the end of the season. The FC St. Gallen-Staad , which had been formed from a merger of the NLA relegated from 2016 ( FC St. Gallen ) and 2017 ( FC Staad ), missed the desired promotion. The newly promoted FC Amriswil withdrew from the championship in winter, whereby all games including those played were canceled. The other relegated members are the second newcomer FC Walperswil and the two promoted players from the previous season, FC Kloten and FC Aïre-le-Lignon .
