Swiss Women's Football Championship 2016/17

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2016/17 Swiss Football Championship was the 47th season in women's football. The FC Neunkirch secured his first championship in club history.

The championship is divided into a qualifying round and a final round. In the qualifying round of the National League A (NLA), the participants of the final round, in which the championship title is played, and the promotion / relegation round ( Barrage ) are determined. In the qualifying round of the National League B (NLB), further participants of the promotion / relegation round and the NLB relegation round are determined.

The 2016/17 season was a transition season, as the size of the NLA will be reduced to eight teams in the future.

In the qualifying round of the National League A , 10 teams competed, each of which played a home and an away game against each opponent. In total, each team played 18 games. As of the following season, the NLA will only consist of 8 teams. This resulted in a transition season for 2016/17 with two additional relegators. Only the best six clubs in National League A qualified for the final round, while, as an exception, four teams had to compete in the promotion / relegation round.

The defending champion was FC Zurich Women . The only climber was SC Derendingen Solothurn .

Ten teams also took part in the National League B. The best two teams qualified for the promotion / relegation round. The remaining eight clubs in National League B had to compete in the relegation round.

Relegated from the NLA, FC St. Gallen joined the team. The climbers from the first division were FC Aïre-le-Lignon and FC Kloten .

The U-21s of FC Zurich Women were not eligible for promotion, which is why Femina Kickers Worb took their place in the promotion round.

Final round NLA

For the first time, only six teams competed in the final round. Two teams met each other one more time, so that each team played five more games. All points earned in the qualification were taken along. The top ranked in the final round was Swiss champions at the end of the season and was eligible to participate in the 2017/18 UEFA Women's Champions League .

On the last day of the match (June 3, 2017), FC Neunkirch secured their first championship title in the club's history.

Four days after winning the championship, the double winner FC Neunkirch announced the withdrawal of its first women's team from play for financial and structural reasons. Instead of FC Neunkirch, runner-up FC Zurich Women will compete in the 2017/18 UEFA Women's Champions League .

Promotion / Relegation Round NLA / NLB

The four worst teams in National League A competed together with the two best teams in National League B in the promotion / relegation round. No points were taken from the qualifying rounds here. Two teams met each other once. In total, each team played five more games. The two best teams qualified for the following season of the NLA, the other four for NLB. In any case, two teams should more relegate than ascend.

Of the NLA teams, the Grasshopper Club Zurich and FC Yverdon Féminin held the class, while FC Staad and SC Derendingen Solothurn had to relegate. Of the NLB teams, FC Aarau and Femina Kickers Worb missed the promotion. However, FC Aarau rose to third place at the green table, as the withdrawal of FC Neunkirch opened up another place.

Relegation round NLB

Since the NLB is temporarily increased to twelve teams at the same time as the NLA is being reduced in size to accommodate the NLA relegated teams, there should only be two relegated teams in the NLB in the transition season. As in the final round of the NLA, all previously earned points were taken away. Here, too, two teams met one more time and played seven more games.

On June 21, 2017, the people in charge of FC Staad, who had been relegated from the NLA, and FC St. Gallen announced that they would create a joint team in the NLB in order to pool their strengths for a return to promotion. The new team will compete under the name FC St. Gallen - Staad in the following season . This made another starting place available in the NLB. Together with the withdrawal of FC Neunkirch, this meant that both FC Schlieren and FC Kloten did not have to relegate.

On June 13, 2017, FF Chênois announced that it would merge with Servette FC and appear as its women's team in the future. In future, the team will go under the name Servette FC Chênois Féminin (SFCCF). The former women's section of CS Chênois had separated from the parent club since 2012 .
