Dump trucks (also depending on the design tippers , tipper or dump trucks , as well as English dumper or tipper called) are partly off-road utility vehicles for the transport of loose bulk materials such as gravel or rock.

Distinction

A basic distinction is made between dump trucks on rigid frames in road haulage and articulated dump trucks in mines . The latter are intended for heavy-duty use. The term dump truck is also used for trailers and other commercial vehicles that are used in agriculture . The so-called front tipper can also be found on construction sites .

Dump trucks in road haulage

Dump trucks are generally used in road haulage, including long-distance haulage, for the transport of bulk goods in earthworks, asphalt in road construction or in the transfer of loose waste products from industry . The dump trucks, which are used either as fixed superstructures or mobile trailers , are usually mounted on fixed steel frames and are themselves welded either from steel elements or aluminum sheets. In addition to semicircular or conical dump trucks, many shipping companies also use box-shaped dump trucks with a pallet width in order to be able to move solid goods flexibly.

The dump trucks permitted in Western and Central Europe are subject to strict weight regulations , which means that a weight-optimized design has become established. The largest manufacturers of dump trucks in Europe are Wielton , Schmitz Cargobull and Kögel , followed by Langendorf Benalu , Carnehl, Feber , Fliegl , Kempf, Meiller , Müller Mitteltal , Schwarzmüller , Stas and Zasław .

Large dump trucks

The two-lane heavy-duty vehicles (SKW) with a large tipping body are used for the removal of overburden material , especially in quarries, gravel pits, coal pits, ore mines or in underground mining. Due to their dimensions and weights, the large dump trucks cannot be approved for road use. In many cases, dump trucks have hydrostatic drive on all wheels. Due to their drive and their design with large wheels, these vehicles can transport large quantities and masses even in rough terrain. With these devices, input weights of up to 810 t can be achieved. These vehicles are often used to transport from the mining site to conveyor systems or crushers.

The BelAZ-75710 is currently (November 2013) the largest and most powerful dump truck built in series . The total mass of the lorry is a maximum of 810 t with a payload of 450 t. It is powered by two diesel engines of 1691 kW / 2300 hp each. Well-known manufacturers of dump trucks in heavy-duty use are Astra , BelAZ , Bell , Bergmann, Caterpillar , Doosan , Euclid , Hitachi , Liebherr , Komatsu , Perlini , Terex and Volvo . Smaller dump trucks for use on construction sites are produced by Ausa, Liebherr, Paus , Wacker Neuson , JCB , Weber and Yanmar , among others .

eDumper

An electric dump truck has been in use in the quarry of the Vigier cement factory in the canton of Bern since 2018 . This Komatsu HD 605-7, which has been converted to an electric motor, weighs 110 tons when fully loaded with a payload of 65 tons. The electric motor has a continuous output of 800 hp with a torque of 9500 Nm. The maximum speed is 40 km / h. The development and changeover time totaled two years. The so-called eDumper recuperated on the downhill flow in the amount of 77 MWh per year, which loads the largest ever built in a vehicle batteries with a capacity of 700 kWh again. An annual saving of 130 tonnes of carbon dioxide and 50,000 liters of diesel is expected in this vehicle. In October 2017, the development team was awarded the European innovation award EMove360 ° in the "Electric vehicles" category.

At the end of 2019 Ballard Power Systems received an order for fuel cells for use in large dump trucks from the Anglo American mining company . First, a 290-ton vehicle will be converted from a diesel drive to a battery and fuel cell. The vehicle is to be used in opencast mines in South Africa.
