Scott William Winters (born August 5, 1965 in New York City , New York ) is an American actor . He gained fame mainly through the role of Cyril O'Reilly from the series Oz - Hell Behind Bars , which he played from 1998 to 2003.

life and career

Scott William Winters was born in New York City, the second oldest of four children. His siblings include actor Dean Winters , writer Bradford Winters, and sister Blair, a nurse. They grew up on Long Island , later in Scottsdale , in the US state of Arizona . In Phoenix , Winters attended Brophy College Preparatory , a Jesuit high school. After graduation, he studied at Northwestern University in Chicago , which he left with a bachelor's degree in economics .

He later decided to devote himself to acting and was soon on the theater stage in his hometown. He took his first role in front of the camera in 1996 in the movie Larry Flynt - The Naked Truth . A year later followed the role of Clark in the Oscar-winning film Good Will Hunting . Shortly thereafter, he was cast in the role of Cyril O'Reilly for the HBO series Oz - Hell Behind Bars in a leading role, which he played from 1998 to 2003. His brother Dean was also part of the cast as Cyril's brother Ryan . In 2001 he played a small role in the movie Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back .

After his role in Oz , Winters was seen as Senior Deputy Matt Jablonski in the series 10-8: Officers on Duty from 2003 through . He was then seen in a recurring role in New York Cops - NYPD Blue . Since then, Winters has increasingly appeared in guest roles in US series, including CSI: Miami , Crossing Jordan - Pathologist with Profile , Numbers - The Logic of Crime , Wildfire , CSI: Vegas , Dexter , Lincoln Heights , Without a Trace - Vanished without a trace or Fringe - FBI borderline cases .
