The constituency of See-Gaster is a sub-unit of the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland , which was formed under the new cantonal constitution of June 10, 2001.

politics

Rapperswil-Jona is located in the middle of the rapidly growing Obersee agglomeration .

For the majority of the population in the constituency See-Gaster, Zurich is closer than St. Gallen . The region is one of the fastest growing in the canton and tax power is nowhere so high in St. Gallen. Some international companies such as Geberit , Holcim or Wicor are based in the constituency. The downside of growth is that housing is expensive. It is more contemplative at the eastern end of the constituency, where the structures at Walensee are village-like and small-scale.

The cantons are of secondary importance for regional identity. The ice hockey club SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers has many fans in the neighboring cantons.

The Christian Democratic People's Party (CVP) dominated the constituency for a long time , but the liberal influence of the FDP was always strong. The cantonal seat of the Green Liberal Party , which was able to establish itself quite early in this region, fell victim to the advance of the SVP in 2016 , but was regained four years later.

The development in the constituency of See-Gaster shows a similar pattern as in the rest of the canton: The formerly dominant CVP was overtaken by the SVP for the first time in 2008. The FDP was able to stop its decline in 2012 and 2016, the SP from 2008.

Political structure

Since January 1, 2003, the constituency consists of the two former districts of See and Gaster . It includes the following municipalities:
