Shining is a Swedish band that was founded in 1996 and plays Depressive Black Metal . Their lyrics and interviews mainly promote suicide and self- harm. According to the band's founder and singer Niklas Kvarforth, mistakenly referred to as Niklas Olsson by fans and the press for a long time, the band name refers neither to the novel The Shining nor to its film adaptation , but rather stands for “the path to enlightenment”.

Band history

The band was formed in 1996 in Halmstad , Sweden.

In May 1998, Submit to Selfdestruction, the first 7 ″ EP, limited to 300 copies, was released via Kvartforth's own label, Suicide Services, also based in Halmstad. On this EP Niklas Kvarforth plays guitar and bass under the pseudonym “Wraith”, Robert took over the vocals and Ted Wedebrand, known from the band Forgotten Tomb , under the pseudonym “Impaler” the drums. The singer left the band in the same year.

In 2000 the debut album I - Within Deep Dark Chambers followed . On this Kvarforth took over part of the vocals and played guitar and keyboards. The majority, however , was sung by Andreas Classen ( Paragon Belial , ex- Bethlehem ). Tusk played bass and Ted Wedebrand played drums again.

On June 21, 2001 the second album II - Livets ändhållplats (Swedish for end stop / end of life ) about Suicide Services was released. The line-up from the previous album remained in place for the recording. Tusk dropped out two months later due to personal problems and was replaced a month later by his younger brother Phil A. Cirone. Shortly afterwards Wedebrand got out, who was replaced by Jan Axel "Hellhammer" Blomberg from Mayhem .

The third album III - Angst, självdestruktivitetens emissarie was released on 2002 on the Italian metal label Avantgarde Music . On this album Inisis played additional guitars, who was only a brief member of Shining.

In 2004 Kvarforth broke up the band, in 2005 they were re-established. The new line-up consisted of Kvarforth, Ludvig Hvit ( Spiritual Beggars , Firebird) on drums, John Doe ( Craft , Twin Earth) and Casado on guitars and Hallander on bass. The reason for the new line-up is the need to perform live, which was not possible in the long term with the old line-up due to the geographical distances between the members.

When Niklas Kvarforth was found missing in July 2006, rumors spread that he had committed suicide. On August 23, 2006, the band published a statement on the official website that Kvarforth had been missing for four weeks. Contrary to his earlier statement that he was Shining, he had chosen as a kind of last will a new singer called "Ghoul", not yet known to the band, with whom Shining would be continued at his request.

On December 18, 2006, a concert for the release of the fifth album V - Halmstad was announced for February 3, 2007 at Diezel in Halmstad , where "Ghoul" would appear as the new singer for the first time. Dødheimsgard acted as the opening act . The concert was planned for the planned DVD Fy fan för livet! recorded. On January 27th, Vesen was announced as the third band. Attila Csihar (Mayhem, Aborym , Ex- Tormentor and others) appeared at the concert as the new singer in the outfit that he also wears for the Sunn-O))) side project Burial Chamber Trio. According to the Avant-garde Metal site , the figure and the pseudonym “Ghoul” are not Csihar, but rather a new alter ego of Kvarforth. Kvarforth took the stage after a few songs and kicked Csihar down. However, it was still covered at this point and only revealed itself later. During the concert, ex-Mayhem singer Maniac , who plays with Kvarforth at Skitliv , came on stage with a swastika carved into his forehead . Kvarforth let him kick and throw guitar stands and other objects at him. After the concert, Kvarforth announced that he would be singing for Shining again. According to Avant-garde Metal , Kvarforth's long disappearance can in fact be explained by a move to Oslo, where he lived for a few months with Yusaf "Vicotnik" Parvez from Dødheimsgard. The action was interpreted as a promotion of Shining, but according to Kvarforth it was "just a misunderstanding or a mistake in the communication between me and the band / management".

The fifth album was originally supposed to be titled V - Besvikelsens dystra monotoni , but the name was later changed to V - Halmstad , which refers to Niklas Kvarforth's hometown. It was published on April 16, 2007 via Osmose Productions with a text written by Ynas “Mörkkh” Lindskog von Malign and a Ludwig van Beethoven composition.

The sixth studio album VI - Klagopsalmer (Swedish ' Klagelieder ') followed on June 30, 2009 via Osmose Productions. On this Tom Cato "King ov Hell" Visnes (ex- Gorgoroth ) played the bass. In November 2009 the new album called VII: Född förlorare was announced.

During an appearance at the Hellfire Festival in Erfurt on March 6, 2010, Kvarforth tried to burn a German flag , which an angry fan prevented him from doing. He subsequently stated that he originally wanted to burn a Swedish flag , but that he had been given a German one. Shining "always loved performing and playing in Germany", he "didn't want to meet Germany, but Sweden". He also tried to explain the incident with high alcohol levels and the consumption of medication that he had to take on a daily basis.

In 2011 the album VII: Född förlorare was released , on which Erik Danielsson from Watain , Christopher Amott from Arch Enemy , Peter Bjärgö from Arcana and Håkan Hemlin from Nordman appeared as guest musicians. The album was created under the influence of heroin, on which Kvarforth was addicted at the time.

The eighth studio album VIII - Redefining Darkness followed in 2012 .

In 2013 the compilation 8 1/2 Feberdrömmar I Vaket Tillstånd was published , which contains various new recordings from 2000–2002 with guest singers. The vocal parts were performed by Attila Csihar and Gaahl ( God Seed , formerly Gorgoroth ) , among others .

In 2015 the band released the album IX - Everyone, Everything, Everywhere Ends . A cover of the Rammstein song Ohne dich was included as a bonus track on the release . Then the band went on tour.

The album X - Varg Utan Flock was released in early January 2018 . On January 5th of that year, the online presence of the German music magazine Visions named the album the record of the week . The placebo cover In the Cold Light of Morning can be found on the album .

style

music

Shining play a very depressive type of Black Metal, which the music press, label advertising and PR and fans often refer to as Suicidal Black Metal or Depressive Black Metal . In 1996, Kvarforth used the term "Suicidal Black Metal" for his own style of music in order to "differentiate himself from the mediocre worms in the scene". However, he moved away from it in 2001 because "hundreds of meaningless bands were using this term from now on", who had completely misinterpreted Kvarforth's "initial vision". He never wanted to create a subgenre “in which idiots express their self-pity and use their music as a shitty form of therapy; it's exactly the wrong way round! My intention was to use music as a weapon against the listener, to forcefully feed it with self-destructive and suicidal ideals in order to hopefully create a wave of uncertainty, sad children hurt themselves and others. "

The style is comparable to that of bands like Burzum and Strid , who played an important role in the musical development of Niklas Kvarforth, as well as Manes . Kvarforth's influences do not come exclusively from Black Metal. In addition to Burzum, Bethlehem and Strid, he also names groups such as Kent , Muse and Coldplay as well as Dido and Everlast . From the album Shining IV - The Eerie Cold , the music shows more and more progressive influences such as extensive spherical instrumental passages, time changes, clear vocals and virtuoso guitar solos.

Concept and texts

The band has no religious intention, although some members are devil worshipers ; Band founder, singer and lyricist Niklas Kvarforth names negativity and its glorification as the focus of the band. The band claims the main goal is to spoil their listeners. According to his own statements, Kvarforth tortures himself during the vocal recordings. According to him, there are also suicides under the influence of his music. He himself sees Shining as "by far the darkest band dealing with this kind of music there is today" .

The band's stage show is one of the most extreme in metal. Singer Kvarforth often cuts himself and his band members at concerts in the body, beats them up or strangles them with guitar strings . In places, Kvarforth also hits and kicks people from the audience. Since the above-mentioned concert in Halmstad, the proportion of extreme show parts has steadily decreased, while provocation and savage insults of the audience are still part of almost every Shining appearance.

Most of the texts are in Swedish . On the sixth studio album VI - Klagopsalmer , the cover of the song Ohm by the band Seigmen (now Zeromancer ) is a title in Norwegian .

In the song Mot Aokigahara from the 2018 album X - Varg Utan Flock , Shining lyrically deals with the Japanese suicide forest Aokigahara .
