From 1761 to 1799, the quasi independently acting Mysore generals Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan occupied power, which subsequently passed to the British . In the 1930s, Solapur played an important role in the Indian struggle for independence.
Attractions
Overall, Solapur is rather poor in historically or culturally significant sights:
- The temple of the same name stands on an island in Siddheswar Lake , and its significance extends far beyond the city limits.
- On the shore of the lake are the ruins of the Bhuikot Fort , possibly built in the 14th century , in which there is a mosque created by Hindu stonemasons . The extensive area is now home to an amusement park, which also includes an animal park.
- The building of today's Municipal Corporation , built by the British in the Indian colonial style with narrow balconies ( jharokhas ) and corner pavilions ( chhatris ), dates from the beginning of the 20th century .
- Attached to the university is a science museum, which presents a variety of prehistoric artifacts, medieval coins, sculptures and fragments collected in the area on private initiative.
