Sigismund von Neukomm

Sigismund Ritter von Neukomm (born July 10, 1778 in Salzburg , Prince Archbishopric of Salzburg , † April 3, 1858 in Paris ) was a composer , pianist , diplomat , freemason . Metternich was temporarily investigating Neukomm for alleged espionage activities .

Life

Neukomm was the oldest child of the school teacher David Neukomm and his wife Kordula, nee. Rieder. Young Neukomm was able to read fluently at the age of four and write at the age of five, and his father provided this early childhood education. A short time later he received music lessons from the Salzburg cathedral organist Franz Xaver Weissauer . At the age of six he is said to have already played the organ, with Weissauer operating the pedal. But he also practiced on string and wind instruments. Neukomm received lessons in harmony from Michael Haydn , whose wife Maria Magdalena was related to Neukomm's mother. At the age of 16 he was appointed titular organist at the Salzburg University Church; he earned his own money for the first time. A short time later he worked as a répétiteur at the Salzburg Theater. Neukomm went to Vienna in March 1797 at the age of 19 .

On the recommendation of Michael Haydn, Neukomm first became a student and then a close collaborator of Joseph Haydn . Haydn apparently valued the musical abilities of his student. He entrusted Neukomm with the preparation of piano reductions of his two oratorios The Creation and The Seasons an and Neukomm reworked the oratorio Il Ritorno di Tobia at Haydn's request and composed arrangements of Scottish songs for him. During the seven years in Vienna from 1797 to 1804 Neukomm gave piano and singing lessons. His most famous students were Anna Milder-Hauptmann and Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart , known as Wolfgang Amadeus the Younger.

The tombstone donated by Neukomm for Joseph Haydn

Neukomm was a great admirer of Mozart . As an encore to Mozart's Requiem , he set the responsory Libera me to music , which is sung during absolution and which is missing in the commonly played version by Mozart- Süßmayr , as it does not belong to the liturgical texts of the Missa pro defunctis . Neukomm donated Joseph Haydn's tombstone and provided it with a five-part riddle on Horace's ambiguous words non omnis moriar .

Neukomm was active in many countries around the world. He was Kapellmeister in Saint Petersburg from 1804 to 1808 , in Paris in 1809 resident pianist with Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord and from 1816 to 1821 Kapellmeister at the imperial court of John VI. in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil . In memory of this, he became the namesake of chair no. 6 of the Academia Brasileira de Música in Rio in 1945 . Most of the time, however, he lived in Paris. After 1820 he traveled to France, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Great Britain.

His works were heard at the solemn entry of King Louis XVIII. in Paris after the victory over Napoleon , as well as on the commemoration of Louis XVI, who was executed on the scaffold in 1793 . during the Congress of Vienna in January 1815. In gratitude, the King of France appointed him Knight of the Legion of Honor , a title of which Neukomm was proud and which from then on he had printed on the title pages of his compositions. In 1842 he held in Salzburg at the unveiling of the first public monument to Mozart a speech and had the musical direction of the celebrations held. In 1837 he unveiled the Gutenberg monument and conducted a choir and orchestra ensemble of almost 500 instrumentalists.

His musical oeuvre comprises over 1,300 compositions, including ten operas, three oratorios , sacred music and songs in various languages. He never got to know his great role model Mozart , but he was the harpsichord teacher of his son Carl Thomas Mozart . Neukomm based his music on that of his role models, but still managed to be innovative. Neukomm is little known today.

Sigismund von Neukomm died on April 3, 1858 at the age of 80 in Paris.
