Silvius Wodarz
Silvius Wodarz (born December 14, 1930 in Ratibor , Upper Silesia ; † December 29, 2018 ) was a German forest official and environmental and nature conservationist . His work in the Board of Trustees for Forest Work and Forest Technology (KWF) made him known nationwide in forestry specialist circles . His name is closely linked to a whole series of modernizations in forestry training. In broad circles, however, he is known primarily as the initiator and chairman of the “ Tree of the Year ” association and board of trustees .
Life
Youth and education
Born in Upper Silesia, Silvius Wodarz first grew up on his parents' farm . At the end of the Second World War he came to Schleswig-Holstein as a displaced person , where he graduated from the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium in Oldenburg in Holstein in 1953 . He then studied forest sciences at the Forestry Faculty of the Georg-August University in Göttingen in Hann. Münden . In 1969 he was there with the dissertation Ertragskundliche studies of the Book - shelter with oak , pine and larch to Dr. forest. PhD . Wodarz has been a member of the Freia Forest Academic Society since he was a student.
Commitment to forest training
From 1958 Wodarz worked in the Schleswig-Holstein state forest administration and headed the forestry training institute of the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Agriculture in Bad Segeberg from 1966 until he left active forestry in 1995 , most recently as forest director .
As head of the establishment in Bad Segeberg was Silvius Wodarz also a member of the working committee " forest work schools " of the Board of Trustees for Forest Work and Technology (KWF) . In 1974 he was elected chairman of the committee, an office of national importance that he held until 1993. He managed to get the German forest work schools to agree on a common line - especially with regard to politics. It was mainly thanks to his commitment that the course was set for modern vocational training for forest managers . He was involved in the ordinance on training to become a forest manager of February 27, 1974, as well as the FOMA and the textbook Der Forstwirt , the first two editions of which he was responsible for as the editor of the “ Forest Work Schools ” committee. He was also involved in publications on forest work by the Evaluation and Information Service for Food, Agriculture and Forests (AID) eV.
Wodarz 'suggestion that forestry trainees take part in the professional competition of German rural youth ultimately led to the establishment of the Waldarbeitsmeisterschaften e. V., whose chairmanship was also taken over by the forest director. After the 1st German Championship in Gehren ( Thuringia ) in 1995, the high public awareness of these activities was the first World Championship of Forest Work in May 1996 during the 12th KWF conference in Oberhof . As a further consequence, the International Association Logging Championships (IALC) was founded in 2004, again with Wodarz as president.
For many years, Wodarz also chaired the working group of the responsible bodies for vocational training - forestry department - trained and examined work teachers in occupational and work pedagogy, and led seminars for work teachers and trainers . The merging of the West and East German forest work schools again meant a major challenge for him in the course of the fall of the Wall . He had also succeeded in involving foreign partners in the work of the KWF committee and in advancing some improvements in occupational safety .
The Board of Trustees for Forest Work and Forest Technology honored Silvius Wodarz with the KWF medal during the annual meeting of the KWF committee “ Forest Work Schools” on October 12, 1999 in Bernau for his services to the training of forest managers and the work of the committee, its honorary chairman he is.
Advocate for the forest and the environment
As an environmental and nature conservationist, Silvius Wodarz acted as imaginative and publicly effective as with forest training issues. In 1972 he founded the environmental protection association Wahlstedt in Schleswig-Holstein and took over its chairmanship. Under the impression of the debate about the so-called " forest dieback " in the 1980s and inspired by model campaigns such as the election of a " Bird of the Year ", he came up with the idea of highlighting a tree species every year. Starting with the pedunculate oak , the association has proclaimed a " Tree of the Year " from 1989 . The Wahlstedt environmental protection association was subsequently named the Tree of the Year Association. V. was renamed, and in 1991 Wodarz set up the "Kuratorium Baum des Jahres (KBJ)" as the association's advisory board. This committee, made up of personalities and organizations from a broad spectrum of society, has since determined the tree of the year for the following year every October. Wodarz chairs both the association and the board of trustees. Right from the start, the “Tree of the Year” campaigns received a great response from the mass media and the general public across Germany .
Since then, Wodarz has continuously expanded his work as an advocate for trees, forests and the environment. So he was the source of ideas and engine of the project "Trees of Peace" at the "Boundless Garden Show Cheb and Marktredwitz " in 2006. In the course of the garden show, all "Trees of the Year" since 1989 were planted and in Cheb 16 ball ash trees and together with one Memorial stone created a green area below the castle complex along the Egerufers . Funding was provided by the Fichtelgebirge Rotary Clubs - of which Wodarz is a board member - and Cheb and the “Tree of the Year” board of trustees. The erection of a memorial stone for the victims of Lidice (Czech Republic) on the edge of a grove he initiated is also his initiative.
In addition, he called in 2008, the Foundation "Dr. Silvius Wodarz Foundation People for Trees ", since 2010" Dr. Silvius Wodarz Foundation Tree of the Year ”into life. With his persistent work under his motto “You don't have to reinvent trees, you just have to rediscover them!” He achieved that people in Germany are more interested in trees and are also more sensitive to their concerns. He encouraged foresters to pay more attention in silviculture to tree species that have become rare, such as the service tree . Last but not least, similar efforts by forest scientists such as Wedig Kausch-Blecken von Schmeling or Hans Joachim Fröhlich also benefited from the "Tree of the Year" campaigns.
CambiaRare, a non-profit association for the protection and promotion of rare trees, awarded Wodarz the “Golden Eibenzweig” on October 18, 2007 in the Berlin Zoological Garden . The award is intended to honor “particularly outstanding efforts by a person to care for trees”.
Silvius Wodarz lived in Marktredwitz and died at the end of December 2018.
