Career

Career start, first division debut and double win

Thern started playing football at IFK Värnamo . For the club he made his debut during the third division season in 2008 in Division 1 in adult football and subsequently established himself in the squad of the competition team. On the one hand, he drew the people in charge of Svenska Fotbollförbundet , who appointed him to the U-17 team in 2009, and on the other hand, attracted the attention of a higher class.

In March 2010, Thern signed a contract with the first division club Helsingborgs IF , which was valid until the end of 2013 , but handed it over to the cooperation partner IFK Värnamo for further development. With his father as coach, the team rose to the second-rate Superettan at the end of the third division season 2010 . For the first division season 2011 he came to Helsingborgs IF. At the side of Erik Sundin , May Mahlangu and Mattias Lindström , he made his debut in the Allsvenskan in April and fought for a regular place over the course of the season. He also played in the squad of the Swedish U-21s coached by Håkan Ericson , in the 3-0 win over the Dutch U-21s in August that year he made his debut as a substitute for two-time goalscorer John Guidetti . In total, he played 23 league games by the end of the season and scored two goals. So he was instrumental in winning the Lennart Johansson Cup for the Swedish national champions. One week after the end of the season, the club met Kalmar FF in the final of the Svenska Cupen . In the 3-1 success Thern was only a substitute player, coach Conny Karlsson left him without a game.

Two more championship titles, Champions League experience and a move abroad

Shortly before Christmas 2011, the league and regional rivals Malmö FF announced that Thern would be committed from January 2012, and the signed contract is valid until the end of 2014. A few days later, national coach Erik Hamrén called him together with Erik Friberg, who was also newly signed by Malmö FF, to replace the failed Ivo Pękalski and Mathias Ranégie in the senior team for a January tour to Asia. In the 5-0 success over the Qatar national team on January 23, 2012, he made his debut as a substitute for Viktor Claesson from the 63rd minute of the game and scored the goal for the interim 4-0 lead. In the following season he was a regular player in midfield of Malmö FF for long periods and won the Swedish championship title with the club in the 2013 season, to which he had contributed with four goals this season. In a following season overshadowed by injuries, he reached the group stage of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the club's history , in which the club were eliminated from the bottom of the group, alongside Markus Rosenberg , Isaac Kiese Thelin , Emil Forsberg , Ricardinho and Pa Konate . At the end of the year he defended the championship title with the team, to which he had contributed with two goals this season in 14 league games.

In December 2014, Malmö FF and the Dutch club SC Heerenveen agreed to change Therns at the turn of the year. In February 2017 Thern was loaned to AIK Solna for the rest of the season . The move to IFK Norrköping followed in January 2018 .
