The Soisberg is 629.9  m above sea level. NHN the highest mountain of the Hessian bowling game , a Hessian area of ​​the Kuppenrhön which is part of the Rhön low mountain range in Bavaria , Hesse and Thuringia . The extinct volcano is located near Soislieden in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg and Fulda districts .

The Soisberg rises on the seam line of the districts of Hersfeld-Rotenburg and Fulda within the Kuppenrhön as part of the Hessisches Kegelspiel mountain landscape. It is located in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve between the communities of Schenklengsfeld in the north-west and Hohenroda in the north-northeast (both districts of Hersfeld-Rotenburg) and Eiterfeld (district of Fulda) in the south-west.

Its summit is about 800 m northwest of the village of Soislieden (Hohenroda). Villages near the mountain are also Wehrshausen (Schenklengsfeld) in the north, Mansbach (Hohenroda) in the east-southeast, Soisdorf in the south-south-east, Unterufhausen in the south-south-west, Oberufhausen in the south-west, Oberweiseborn (all to Eiterfeld) in the west and Unterweiseborn (Schenklengsfeld) in the west-north-west.

The Breizbach (Breitzbach) rises to the northeast of the Soisberg at the grass pit and the Sauer rises to the southwest near Oberweiseborn . The neighboring mountains include: Schwärzelsberg ( 464.6  m ) and Langeberg in the north-northeast, Grasberg ( 478  m ) in the east-northeast, Steiger ( 446  m ) in the south-west and Eichberg ( 412.4  m ) in the north-west.

Natural allocation

The Soisberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35), in the main unit Vorder- und Kuppenrhön (353) and in the subunit Kuppenrhön (353.2) to the natural area Soisberger Kuppenrhön (353.22).

Geology and landscape

The Soisberg is an extinct volcanic cone made of shell limestone with basalt perforations. It is forested and surrounded by agricultural land.

Protected areas

The Soisberg landscape protection area ( CDDA no. 378690; designated 1973; 3.7213  km² in size) and parts of the fauna-flora-habitat area Vorderrhön (FFH no. 5325-305; 36.904 km²) are located on the Soisberg . Parts of the Schwärzelsberg-Langeberg-Grasburg nature reserve (CDDA no. 165500; 1996; 2.4512 km²) are located on the lower part of its northeast slope, which slopes down to the Breizbach, as well as on the Schwärzelsberg, Langeberg and Grasberg .

The almost 25 m high Soisberg Tower has stood on the summit of the Soisberg since 2003, a steel structure with wooden cladding with 111 steps. It was inaugurated on May 1, 2004. The tower offers a wide all-round view of the Hohe Meißner in the north, the Thuringian Forest in the east, the Hohe Rhön in the south, the Vogelsberg in the southwest, the Knüll in the west and the Habichtswald in the northwest. When the view is clear, you can see the Kassel Hercules . The Soisbergturm e. V. takes care of the tower and provides a summit book in which hikers can register.

Traffic and walking

South past the Soisberg extends between upper Ufhausen and Mansbach the national road  3380. Approximately branches halfway between two villages thereof, the county road  under 14, the east past Soislieden , where branch roads lead to the north-northwest by Wehrshausen to L near 3172 Schenklengsfeld runs . It merges with the L 3171, which leads southwest to Unterweiseborn . From this, the K 6 and K 158 road axes, which run south-east to Ufhausen and which crosses the L 3380 after passing the village, branches off in Unterweiseborn. So you can drive around the mountain.

Many field, forest and hiking trails run on and over the Soisberg. About the northern, eastern and southern slopes of the mountain passes in the section Landeck Mountain -Schenklengsfeld-Soisberg- Stallberg - Hünfeld the European long-distance path E6 .
