Soko Tierschutz is a non-profit association founded in Germany in 2013 that claims to be committed to animal rights as well as environmental and consumer protection. It is financed exclusively through membership fees and donations.

Soko Animal Welfare Revelations

The publication of research by the association led to media interest several times.

Fur farm

The online portal Die Welt published a report in July 2014 on research at a Polish fur farm.

Chickens and turkeys

In May 2014, Spiegel TV showed recordings from turkey fattening facilities in southern Germany (contract fattener of a subsidiary of the Austrian company Hubers Landhendl ) in which suffering animals were filmed. For example, animals could be seen being disposed of alive in a bin.

In October 2014, the media reported on the association's research on the occasion of the Oktoberfest about the conditions in intensive animal husbandry of chickens and turkeys.

In August 2019, Soko Tierschutz published a video showing a brutal approach to loading turkeys in Hungary . The video was made at one of the Truthahn AG suppliers . The transport of animals to Germany is also criticized - especially because of the enormous heat .

Live plucking of geese

In November 2014, Spiegel TV broadcast a report on live plucking of geese, which is painful for the animals, in which recordings from research by Soko Tierschutz were shown. The Stiftung Warentest had previously criticized manufacturers of down duvets for not being able to prove that the feathers and down they processed were not live-plucked.

Pig fattening

In October 2016, Stern TV published images from a pig fattening in Merklingen. More than 60 animals had to be killed during on-site controls. The company carried the QS seal as well as the seal of "Baden-Württemberg Quality Mark" and the seal of the Animal Welfare Initiative. The operator was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment in the first instance before the Ulm District Court.

Hatchery

In April 2018, the ZDF WISO program showed recordings of the illegal killing of day-old female chicks in a German organic hatchery.

Dairy farm Geven & Rabelink GbR

On May 9 and 16, 2018, stern TV reported on the dairy cattle research from the Geven & Rabelink GbR farm in Demker . Around 700 cattle are kept there, which produced milk for the Middle Elbe dairy plant . The research shows that dead and already decomposing animals are not legally removed from the stables and the veterinary office in the district of Stendal does not seem to have sufficient controls. The public prosecutor's office has now started investigations in this regard. A ban on keeping and caring for animals was imposed on the operator. This was confirmed in an urgent legal protection procedure by the VG Magdeburg. An animal husbandry and care ban was also imposed on the successor (not yet legally binding).

Dairy farm Bad Grönenbach

In July 2019, Soko Tierschutz presented the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Fakt and Report Mainz with photos of the farms of one of the largest Bavarian dairy farmers, Franz Endres, showing, among other things, how animals are mistreated and not cared for as prescribed. The recordings were from the end of May to the end of June 2019, and Soko Tierschutz also reported the company. As a result, further controls were carried out, according to which around half of the animals concerned had shown abnormalities. In addition, at the end of July, as part of an investigation into nine people for violating the Animal Welfare Act, several companies, veterinary practices and apartments were searched. The Bavarian Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber ( FW ) announced stronger controls, several processing companies terminated their cooperation with the affected company. After anonymous reports, investigations against another large farmer from Allgäu were started in August.

LPT animal research laboratory near Hamburg

From December 2018 to March 2019, Soko Tierschutz smuggled an undercover investigator into the animal testing laboratory LPT ( Laboratory of Pharmacology and Toxicology ) in Mienenbüttel near Hamburg , who made video recordings of tortured animals and animal experiments with a hidden camera. The image material was passed on to the Süddeutsche Zeitung and the ARD magazine FAKT and was made public. Thousands of people then demonstrated in October and November 2019 against the abuses in the laboratory and against animal experiments. Soko Tierschutz filed a criminal complaint. The responsible authorities in Lower Saxony also filed criminal charges on suspicion of serious animal welfare violations. The public prosecutor's office in Stade and the Hamburg public prosecutor's office were involved.

Other publications

At the end of March 2020, Soko Tierschutz published pictures from a cattle fattening in Ludwigsburg, in which the animals are standing in their droppings. Criminal charges were filed at the same time.

Publications from slaughterhouses

On May 4, 2017, Soko Tierschutz published film material from the Fürstenfeldbruck slaughterhouse. The slaughterhouse then ceased operations. The prosecution investigated. The court issued penalty orders against three employees. The criminal process is still ongoing.

In December 2017, the association published undercover recordings that were shot in a slaughterhouse in Düren (North Rhine-Westphalia). The slaughterhouse in question supplied the McDonald’s fast food company, among others . The recordings show repeated problems with stunning pigs and cattle as well as serious hygienic deficiencies during the slaughter of the animals. The ARD's report magazine Report München sent a report on this on December 5, 2017. As the Aachen public prosecutor announced on August 5, 2019, their previous investigations would largely confirm the allegations. The investigations are directed against the operator as well as against employees.

Also in December 2017, Soko Tierschutz published images from the Eschweiler slaughterhouse, which were taken during a trial slaughter under official supervision. For this, the association had smuggled in an employee. The veterinary office confirmed that "the pictures show violations relevant to animal welfare". The slaughter was stopped after consultation with the animal welfare officer and the slaughterhouse went bankrupt.

Activists from Soko Tierschutz documented several violations of animal welfare under the supervision of officially appointed veterinarians in an OSI slaughterhouse in Tauberbischofsheim in January 2018 . Soko Tierschutz played the recordings to stern TV , which reported on it on February 14, 2018. On the same day the OSI slaughterhouse was temporarily closed.

On October 9, 2018, video material from the slaughterhouse in Hohengören-Damm was published in the broadcast ARD-Fakt. It showed how sick cows that could not be transported were pulled into the slaughterhouse using a cable winch. A stun gun was also often used, including shocking animals in the face. The slaughterhouse was then closed.

On October 10, 2018, Stern TV published video material from Soko Tierschutz from a slaughterhouse in Bad Iburg. It showed how seriously ill cows were pulled from the transporter to the slaughterhouse with a winch. There is also the suspicion that dead cows were also delivered and processed. The slaughterhouse was then liquidated. The Lower Saxony Ministry of Agriculture has filed a criminal complaint. This then initiated investigations against the slaughterhouse employees, but not against the suppliers. Soko Tierschutz therefore filed a criminal complaint against the investigating public prosecutor in Oldenburg in mid-April 2019 on suspicion of perverting the law.

On April 3, 2019, Soko Tierschutz registered new material from the slaughterhouse in Düdenbüttel in the Stade district with the Ministry of Agriculture. Again, non-transportable animals are said to have been pulled out of the transporters with rope winches. Thereupon this filed a criminal complaint against the company. A closure until further notice was arranged and meat samples were taken. In addition to Soko Tierschutz, the Stade district and the Lower Saxony Ministry of Agriculture also reported the slaughterhouse. A little later, the slaughterhouse operator's lawyer announced that operations would be discontinued and the slaughterhouse would close permanently. The public prosecutor's office in Oldenburg sees the initial suspicion of cruelty to animals and has started investigations against the operators of the slaughterhouse, employees of the slaughterhouse, veterinarians of the district and a majority of farmers.

criticism

In September 2014, Stern TV broadcast a report about animal experiments on monkeys at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, in which recordings from undercover research by Soko Tierschutz were shown, in which the alleged handling of the employees by the animals was documented.

According to Alexander Grau from Cicero, however , the secretly shot recordings were "trimmed to appeal to the audience, underlaid with emotionalizing music and provided with an irrelevant, sensational commentary, so that the inexperienced viewer must have the impression that sadistic conditions prevailed in the Tübingen laboratory". The photos showed an "apparently blood-smeared, tortured rhesus monkey". In fact, the “blood” was just disinfectant. Stefan Treue , who was asked as an expert by the Max Planck Society for an assessment, came to the conclusion that the animals at the Max Planck Institute in Tübingen were treated with great care and professionalism. As a result of the association's recordings, there were massive insults and threats against the scientists and employees of the institute. This went so far that "employees of the institute [...] were partially denied the opportunity to rent an apartment". In addition, there were "hate mails with death threats, rabble in shops [...] and regular demonstrations". According to Grau, the campaign testifies to "hatred, violence and above all disinformation".

Tübingen's Mayor Boris Palmer described this as a "serious setback for research". Hundreds of scientists, including 16 Nobel Prize winners, expressed their solidarity with the head of the institute.

Friedrich Mülln

The founder of the association, Friedrich Mülln, researched abuses in animal husbandry long before the association was founded. Friedrich Mülln's father worked in the meat industry: “Sometimes he would tell you about it at the breakfast table when he saw rotten meat again,” said Mülln in an interview with vegan-ist-zukunft.de. On 14 October 2008 Friedrich Mülln received for revelations about animal cruelty and especially for his successful legal dispute over freedom of expression with the global company Covance the award for civil courage of Solbach-Freise Foundation .

A case against Mülln, according to which he is said to have instigated secret sound and image recordings, was discontinued in August 2014 against payment of 1500 euros to the Munich animal shelter.
