The Sony α NEX-5 is a lightweight and compact digital system camera from Sony . It is listed under the Alpha range and has been available since May 2010. NEX means New E-Mount eXperience . E-mount derives its name the first letter E of Eighteen on what to the flange relates mm from 18th In terms of the size of the image sensor (APS-C size: 23.4 mm × 15.6 mm), it is comparable to digital SLR cameras , but has no viewfinder. An electronic viewfinder is only available for the successor model NEX-5N. The slightly cheaper Sony α NEX-3 model is very similar.

In August 2011 Sony launched the α NEX-5N as the successor to the NEX-5, and in late autumn 2011 the α NEX-7.

features

One of the special features of the α NEX-5 is the direct control of the depth of field : the degree of blurring of the foreground and background can be set using a multifunctional rotary knob. It also offers continuous adjustment of exposure and autofocus while filming a video, as well as an automatic horizontal and vertical swivel panorama function. Its strengths include taking pictures in quick succession: In addition to the continuous picture mode of up to 7 pictures per second (focus and exposure preset), the NEX-5 uses this ability to reduce motion blur in portraits or poor lighting conditions by combining six pictures into one still picture. She masters Auto Exposure Bracketing (exposure series) with three exposures at 0.3 and 0.7 EV aperture difference. It can also compute a photo with a high range of brightness from three superimposed images with different exposures. Graduations from 1EV to 6EV can be set. Using Auto-HDR , the HDRI generation from exposure series is automated. With the exception of the α NEX-5 C and α NEX-3 C models, SD cards with an integrated WLAN function (Eye-Fi) are supported.

Further developments

In September 2011 the model α NEX-5N appeared . It differs from the previous model in that it has a higher image speed (50p) and manual setting options for video recordings (50p), the option of attaching an electronic viewfinder, a (deactivatable) touchscreen and a new image sensor with a slightly higher resolution of 16.1 million pixels and ISO 100 as the basic sensitivity.

In August 2012, the α NEX-5R was presented as the successor to the 5N , which offers, among other things, a hybrid autofocus in which the contrast AF is supported by a phase AF that is located directly on the sensor. In addition, an additional dial, an additional function key, WLAN and downloadable applications were added, with which you can e.g. B. can be triggered via mobile phone, with a live image being transmitted to the latter. The NEX5R can swivel its monitor upwards by 180 °.

There were different variants to buy, e.g. B. NEX-5RKB , where the 5R stands for the version, the second letter indicates the lens (K = SEL-1855, L = SEL-P1650, Y = SEL-P1650 and SEL-55210 together) and the third indicates the color (B = black, W = white, S = silver).

The slightly modified model α NEX-5T has been available since September 2013 . It can contact other devices via Near Field Communication (NFC).

In 2013, the name NEX ended because there was always confusion, but when users and the media also automatically assigned the A-Mount to the name Alpha, which of course was not true in the case of the NEX. From then on, Sony differentiated its two systems with the designation ILCA for A-mount cameras and, as the successor to the NEX, ILCE for E-mount cameras.

From then on, there was no real successor to the NEX5, the similar-looking ILCE α5000 had the capabilities of camera apps / WLAN / NFC but no longer a multifunctional connection for microphone, viewfinder or flash and the video frame rate fell back to 25 / 30P.

Differences to the NEX-3

NEX-3 with E16mm F2.8 pancake lens

The housing of the Sony NEX-3 is slightly larger and heavier and made of plastic rather than magnesium. In addition to the colors black and silver, the camera is also available in red and pink, has no sensor for a remote control, has a smaller buffer and offers a reduced video resolution according to the 720p standard .

System accessories

Lenses

The lenses have an E-mount connection, have an integrated motor for autofocus and can also be used with the camcorders of the NEX series. From 2012 there will also be lenses such as the SEL-P1650 (the abbreviation stands for: Sony E-mount lens in a particularly short pancake format with a focal length of 16 to 50mm) with a kind of rocker switch for an electric zoom, the so-called power zoom, the especially useful for filmmakers.

Adapter for further lenses

Minolta MD 2 / 85mm adapted to Sony NEX-5
  • The glassless Sony adapter LA-EA1 enables the use of NEX cameras with A-bayonet lenses from Sony, Konica Minolta and Minolta with a camera-specific format factor of 1.5x. With SSM and SAM lenses, autofocus is also supported with a firmware update.
  • The Sony LA-EA2 adapter contains a semi-transparent mirror with which phase autofocus can be used. With this, the autofocus operation is then also possible with older A-lenses that are dependent on a camera motor drive. The LA-EA2 is compatible with the NEX-5 / NEX-3 / NEX-C3.
  • Another adapter LA-EA3 has been available since the end of 2012. This is almost identical in structure to the LA-EA1, but enables so-called full-format lenses to be operated without optical restrictions on full-format video cameras such as the NEX VG 900, which was also released, but also the Sony Alpha 7 series , which was released a year later . It behaves like the LA-EA1 on the NEX cameras.
  • Since the end of 2013 there has been a fourth adapter LA-EA4, which has a semi-transparent mirror and a camera motor drive (similar to LA-EA3 to LA-EA1) like the LA-EA2, but is suitable for full-format lenses on full-format sensors. It behaves like the LA-EA2 on the NEX cameras.
  • Third-party adapters are available for a variety of other lens mounts. With most purely mechanical couplings, the NEX supports neither aperture nor distance settings; both must be set directly on the lenses. (Exceptions are currently adapters for Canon EF lenses, e.g. from Techart, Sigma, CommLite and Metabones.) Accordingly, all automatic programs that contain an aperture or distance setting are also omitted. Manual exposure metering and automatic aperture control work without any problems, as does exposure control with the attached flash. The current firmware supports manual focusing by means of an electronic viewfinder magnifier and a process called "edge enhancement" (also known as "focus peaking"), in which areas in focus are highlighted in color on the display. You can also zoom in on the live image for better focusing.

Options

  • for the accessory shoe: flash (included), stereo microphone, optical viewfinder, from NEX-5N an electronic viewfinder that can be folded up by 90 °.
  • Remote control (not NEX-3 series)

software

  • Firmware improvements: Ver. 02 to ver. 05.
  • The software supplied with the α cameras
    • Image Data Suite with the programs Image Data Converter SR and Image Data Lightbox SR . Image Data Converter SR is used to edit and convert RAW files.
    • Picture Motion Browser (PMB) is used for photo management, previewing HD films and viewing panoramic images.

The operating system of the NEX-5 camera is based on Linux . The supplied programs and firmware updates can be installed under the Windows and Mac OS X operating systems (except PMB).

PlayMemories Camera Apps

On the NEX-5R, NEX-5T and NEX-6 it is possible to install additional applications directly via built-in W-LAN or via the USB port of the camera using a PC. Some of them are free, others currently cost between € 4.99 and € 9.99.

Currently available apps are:

  • Time lapse (several pictures are taken according to the number and time to be set beforehand, which can also be converted directly by the camera into a film)
  • Cinematic photography (Several recordings are set off to form a static film, whereby a sub-area can be defined that plays all the recordings in sequence. Effect similar to an animated GIF.)
  • Smart remote control (triggering the camera with limited setting options with simultaneous live image transmission via WLAN from a smartphone or tablet)
  • Picture effect +
  • Direct upload (transfer to online services such as Facebook via the integrated WLAN possible)
  • Photo retouching
  • Multiframe RM (multiple releases are calculated into a single image, which is intended to improve noise behavior)
  • Professional series (3 pictures each are taken either with different focus, different aperture, different time settings or one with and without flash. All pictures are saved as they are.)
  • Various apps for changing the keyboard language

Award

The NEX-5 has been selected by the European Imaging and Sound Association for the European Micro System Camera 2010-2011 ( EISA Award ).
