Southeastern New England AVA is a wine-growing region in the US states of Connecticut , Massachusetts and Rhode Island recognized since March 28, 1984 by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives .

The American Viticultural Area Southeastern New England is divided into the 13 administrative areas of New Haven , New London and Middlesex in Connecticut; Bristol , Newport , Providence and Washington in Rhode Island; and Barnstable , Bristol , Dukes , Nantucket , Norfolk and Plymouth in Massachusetts.

The area stretches from the southern part of the city of Boston in the east to New London in the west and includes, in addition to a nearly 24 km wide coastal strip along Long Island Sound , on the Cape Cod peninsula and along Massachusetts Bay, also all the coastal islands in this area. Although the climate is moderate due to the proximity to the coast , the winemakers still choose the very hardy French hybrid grapes such as Seyval Blanc , Vidal Blanc and Maréchal Foch . As part of a quality improvement, however, more and more noble vines of the Vitis vinifera family such as B. the Riesling entrance in the grape variety mirror.
