The district of Hildesheim-Göttingen is one of six - not independent - sub-districts of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover , which is divided into the districts of Hanover , Hildesheim-Göttingen, Lüneburg , Osnabrück , East Friesland-Ems and Stade . The state superintendent is based in Hildesheim .

Geographical location

The district is located in the southeast of Lower Saxony and the Hanoverian regional church . In the west it borders on the Evangelical Church of Westphalia , in the southwest and south on the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck , in the east on the Evangelical Church in Central Germany , and on the Evangelical Lutheran Regional Church in Braunschweig (which is partly enclosed by the Sprengelgebiet ), as well as in the north and northwest to the districts of Lüneburg and Hanover.

In the north, the Berlin – Braunschweig – Hanover and Berlin – Braunschweig – Hildesheim railways run through the Sprengel area, which lies in a north-south direction on the Hanover – Kassel railway line .

The motorways that cross the Sprengel area show a similar course: the A 2 (Berlin – Hanover – Dortmund), the A 39 (Wolfsburg – Salzgitter – Hildesheim) and the A 7 (Hanover – Kassel).

History / structure

The district has only existed since the regional church district reform came into force on July 1, 2007. Before that, there were separate districts of Hildesheim (until 1957: Hildesheim-Harz ) and Göttingen (until 1957: Göttingen-Grubenhagen ). When the two areas were merged, the Hameln-Pyrmont parish was incorporated from the dissolved Calenberg-Hoya district, while the two church districts Gifhorn and Wolfsburg were transferred from the Hildesheim district to the Lüneburg district .

The St. Michaelis Church in Hildesheim is the preaching church of the state superintendent.

The result is the largest district of the Hanoverian regional church with nine church districts today : Göttingen, Hameln-Pyrmont (seat: Hameln), Harzer Land (seat: Osterode), Hildesheimer Land-Alfeld (seat: Alfeld and Elze), Hildesheim-Sarstedt (Seat: Hildesheim), Holzminden-Bodenwerder (seat: Holzminden), Leine-Solling (seat: Northeim), Münden (seat: Hann. Münden) and Peine. The Hildesheimer Land-Alfeld parish was created on January 1st, 2011 from the Hildesheimer Land and Alfeld parish, the Harzer Land parish on January 1st, 2013 from the Clausthal-Zellerfeld , Herzberg and Osterode parish .

In this area there are 433 parishes with 580,000 parishioners who are cared for by 446 pastors and 150 deacons in cooperation with around 500 preachers and lecturers , with almost 1000 church musicians , with almost 500 sextons and with more than 2200 church leaders as well as a large number of volunteer workers. 693 churches and chapels are available as places of worship.

In the area of the Sprengels the inhabitants are predominantly of the Evangelical Lutheran denomination. Exceptions are the areas of Eichsfeld and the Hildesheim area, in which there is a high proportion of the population with a Roman Catholic denomination . There is also the Evangelical Reformed " Dominion Plesse ".
