Stéphane Jean-Jacques Richer (born June 7, 1966 in Ripon , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 1188 games for the Canadiens de Montréal , New Jersey Devils , Tampa Bay Lightning , St. Louis Blues and Pittsburgh Penguins played in the National Hockey League on the left winger position . Richer won the Stanley Cup twice during his 17 seasons in the NHL  - in 1986 with the Canadiens de Montréal and in 1995 with the New Jersey Devils.

Career

Despite many obstacles in his youth, Richer managed to get a place in the squad of the Bisons de Granby in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . In the 1984 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the second round as 29th by the Canadiens de Montréal . The following season he started in Granby, moved within the league to the Saguenéens de Chicoutimi before playing for Canada at the 1985 World Junior Championship . He then came to his first use in the NHL, but was shortly thereafter sent to the American Hockey League to the Canadiens de Sherbrooke .

He also began the 1985/86 season in Sherbrooke, but soon he made his breakthrough in the NHL. At the end of that season he won the Stanley Cup with the Canadiens . The actual breakthrough to the star came in the 1987/88 season when he became the first Canadiens player since Guy Lafleur to score 50 goals in one season. As much as he was able to inspire the fans with his speed and goals, he was always criticized. It was often said that he would not give everything. He was also plagued by minor injuries in the early 1990s.

For the 1991/92 season he was given with Tom Chorske to the New Jersey Devils . In return, the Canadiens received Kirk Muller and Roland Melanson . With his offensive qualities he also played a strong role in the Devils and helped in the 1994/95 season when the team won the Stanley Cup for the first time. After another year in New Jersey, he moved back to the Canadiens for Lyle Odelein .

After a year with the Canadiens, he moved to the middle of the 1997/98 season with Darcy Tucker and David Wilkie , who sent Patrick Poulin to Montreal, among others , to the Tampa Bay Lightning . In Florida he was unable to build on his earlier achievements. After the Lightning no longer relied on him, he switched to the St. Louis Blues in January 2000 , which sent Rich Parent and Chris McAlpine to Tampa.

He signed as a free agent with the Washington Capitals , but then decided to end his career before the start of the season. For the 2001/02 season he made his comeback with the Pittsburgh Penguins . There he played his 1,000 NHL game. Shortly before the end of the season, he returned to the New Jersey Devils. After ten games in the regular season and three playoff games, he finally ended his active career.
