history
The St. George Grant was awarded on August 18, 1763 by Benning Wentworth under the New Hampshire Grants with a size of 2200 acres (890 hectares ). This was an unusually small size for a town, the usual 23,040 acres. Settlement began in 1784. The first settler in the area was Joshua Isham from Connecticut. The town's constituent assembly took place in 1813.
Wentworth named the town after the patron saint of England George around King George III. , in whose name the lands were given, to appease. George III was not pleased with the way Wentworth handled the land grants as conflicts arose with the New York colony and he waived a tax in favor of the Crown. As governor, Wentworth actually earned more than the king, as he received a portion of every grant and also charged fees for the award.
